Artist Comment
Three in a series of Kino novel chapter illustrations. This is the illustrator for "Kanojo no Tabi -- Love and
Bullets" (Her travels: Love and Bullets) and is the chapter that directly proceeds Kanojo no Tabi -- Chances (of
which I walled yesterday.) In Chances, there is a flock of doves flying high above a church in the rain. In Love and
Bullets, one of the doves has fallen, a victim of violence: a symbol of peace destroyed by a symbol of war. As all of
the chapter illustrations are in black and white I preserved the monotone effect, although in this case I used red to
symbolize the bird's blood -- yet red is also the color most associated with love. I found the image powerful in
its simplicity -- the dove negatively outlined by the pool of blood below it -- almost as if the dove doesn't
exist, or is only defined in its death. An anti-war message if I ever saw one.

Edit: I always forget how bad red and jpeg get along. The thumbnail may look messy, but the full size should be clean.
