Revenge... is best a dish served cold
Sure, it's an old cliche, but that's what's sung in the ending theme to Gankutsuou, and it's not cliche for nothing - it fits the personality of the Count quite well.
I've finished watching Gankutsuou so it's time to make me some more walls! The bishounen flood continues (after slight derailment by Kino wallpapers, which are always top priority :D) with the Count of Monte Cristo. Scans from here and here. I removed Albert, because he's such a pansy. Redid the patterns and all. I also patterned the outlines for more effect.
The celestial mobile background was drawn in Illustrator based off of the intricate clockwork mobile at the Count's residence in Champs Elysee (basis), using Clock of the Sun and Moon as a starting point. Drew in the eye-compass (a creepy thing I must say) and added all the little floating spheres, including two constellations; the (big) Dipper and Cassiopeia.
The starfield is an old one I had from a Stellvia wallpaper with numerous modifications. I ended up making the entire background golden to contrast with the Count's blue hair and face and to match with his outlining.
I wasn't originally going to make this a celestial wall, but when I was positioning stuff, I dumped in the starfield so I would have a non-white background, and because the original scan was celestial. It looked pretty good like that, so I stuck with the idea.
This wallpaper is dedicated to KiWiB0RG who was sweet enough to send me most of the episodes after I got frustrated with the lack of xdcc bots serving this series in AniKraze's channel.
EDIT: As per some comments, I've changed the text to the same blue as the Count's hair. It makes sense, since "revenge is a dish best served cold".
EDIT2: I just realized this is my 100th wall on MT! Huzzah!
EDIT3: (last one perhaps?) Decomposition of Revenge
EDIT4: (I swear, I'll stop editing this one day) Additional resolutions are now available at DA! Desktop Anime

Gankutsuou is sexy. That being said, so is this wall. ^_^ I'm glad to see you return to Gankutsuou after Kino (even though you've got me hooked on Kino now and I'm itching to wall some of the artbook scans) and this wallpaper is definitely in top form. I love the whole golden tone, it works very well with the Count's coloring. The background is subtle enough to provide a nice backdrop without being too showy. The only thing that really bothers me is the text. I've seen you do some absolutely lovely text, but this just seems to fall flat. It's too bold and in-your-face for the rest of the dark, mystical feel of the wall. It seems to me like it should be more...furtive, if that's really a word you can apply to fonts. :x Overall tho, this is definitely stunning. ^_^

Amazing! I've seen its work in progress and I already liked it, now that it's complete it's even better, lol. I have really no complaints, colourwise it's awesome, the wallpaper is basically separated by two areas (light one with the starfield/vectorlines background and "dark" one with Count's vector) which are integrated really well due to the fact that you matched starfield's colour with Count's outlines colour. I disagree with biri about the text tho, I think its layout and style perfectl fits the theme, the colours and even the general "mood" of the anime series as well. Good job Tama. :)

I've had this question numerous times. The tribox is part of my signature, and it's part of the design logo from DA! The hope was that even if people tried to erase my main sig, perhaps they'd forget that portion, and it would remain as a DA! watermark. You'll notice it's on all of my anime wallpapers. :D

nice idea XD it's like you're getting way on going against counterfit money XD
    -----------------------------------------------------
the bg looks awesome :3 you didn't make the bottom half as bright as the top which is good cause it'll just make the bg too busy and take eyes off count :X the top half of the bg looks really nice *_* it sorta looks like someone sprikled golden glitter on the wall XD and i have to agree.. that eye compass on the bg is kinda creepy if you stare at it too long :P great job *two thumbs up*

I'll admit that i couldn't stand looking at the psychedelic coloring and pattern when trying to watch the anime so I stopped towards the beginning. I liked the idea but it just gave me a headache. The cool colors of the upper half of the count plays really well with the warmer colors from the BG. The texture in the BG as well as the imagery fit well with the whole mysticism of the series. I have to agree with biriwilg on that the text seems a little too heavy handed. It just stands out a little too much. I think you should try a cool color scheme to try and tie it in with the count since the warm colored BG covers most of the wall anyway. The title seems to be a little too close to the left edge as well. It almost looks as if it's on the verge of falling off the edge of the wall. Other than those small things, it's a really creative and playful way to take advantage of the patterned and colorful series.

whoa, funky colors, it takes sometimes for my eyes to adjust. The bg's detail is very interesting, and the pattern is fascinating to pick apart. One question, are those grey hair in the count or just some effect I couldn't pick out. great work Tama, and your introduction to your wallie is wonderful as always. :)

  12. Aa-chan May 02, 2005

Not familiar with the anime, but the effects on the character look good and the background is nice. Good work as always :) .

  13. UndyingShadow May 02, 2005

holy crap Tama, this is seriously one bad ass wall. great use of vibrant colors and awesome use of effects. good job!

  14. Neeya May 02, 2005

I <3 this series ^-^ Love the wall, it fits the anime perfectly, and i know what a pain it must have been to get that image into wall-able shape. Nice job ^^

  15. Electrastar May 02, 2005

I actually started disliking the Count towards the end of the show...but this is an awsome wallpaper.....Evreything just screams Gankutsuou....The backound looks like it was directly taken from an artbook of the series.....Really, it's really really awsome. Oh and the the matching text color to the count's hair is a nice touch.

  16. shinorei May 03, 2005

Interesting wallpaper and anime! ^.^ Makes me want to watch it! ^.^
The wallpaper itself is very special indeed. Very special. *nods*
Even the character looks special - looks like he lives in some special world that people walk carefully because they don't want their body to break into pieces, (in other words slightly distorted shape) - but I know he is not really "distorted", is he? Because that will be hilarious. XD +fav

  17. MadWiz May 04, 2005

waa lazy me.. hesistated whether to comment =p since I think I did a bit on irc
the background looks really beautiful and I like that eye there lol
the font of the text.. is best a dish served cold.. somehow doesn't look too right for me.. but since I can't say how guess its ok XD
the hair colour.. I still don't really like it =p to me the hair has a bit of greenish look and feel there..

nice vector and overall wallpaper anyway =p
    so many wallpapers!! o_O
if I get 1 wallie done and up on mt.. I might probably feel as happy XD I am just really too lazy

I actually like hair the best - reminds me of a stormy sky and looks like it was transparent or something (really difficult to explain).

  19. LordStyphon May 06, 2005

Great wallpaper here. It really has the look and feel of the anime, and that's impressive. Amazing work. =D

  20. RobinSena May 16, 2005

The Count of Montecristo has never been so sexy!!! XD

  22. Vequinox Jul 10, 2005

Rargh, I can't believe I hadn't commented on this yet. It's so beautiful! (And now because of all your lovely Gankutsuou walls, I've GOT to see the anime!)
The muted grungy background fits this so well...(and that eye compass IS creepy, yet so fitting!) Just so beautiful.

  23. ibmman85 Sep 17, 2005

geez the background works so darn well with that, the texture is good. the count really kinda scares me heh

  24. joemighty16 Dec 01, 2005

That is absolutely AMAZING! I haven't finished this series yet, but the Count is needless to say my favorite character! So I love any wall that features him - and this wall is just so insanely well done!

Forgive me but I can't even start to compliment on each and every facet of this wall - its just to good to start and belittle it by breaking it up and analyzing it.
