nice work cleaning the scan, and good extraction ^^ I like the soft snow effects you've got in the front. Though the photograph in the background looks out of place, it's too realistic (it's generally a bad idea to use photo backgrounds with anime foregrounds...), you can try to median filter it a bit to get rid of the details, and then paint over or smudge a bit to get rid of the realism.

I had to redo parts of the scan that were missing, i.e. Haruhi's head and Mikuru's head. I made a simple, snowy
background that I think matched the scan well.

Looks good, the extraction is nice, but i think the scan it's little bit grainy...
Plus the scan doesn't fit the background, as Rose said, it's way too realistic. Some filters and it would look nice..
