A new Nana wallpaper, in preparation for the WAR walling contest. No, this is probably not going to be my entry to the contest; I plan to make several wallpapers, then based on feedback and my personal feelings on the walls, choose one to send in.
When I saw this scan (and the other, similar image which had the girl more in profile), I knew I wanted to wall it. I think it was the juxtaposition of a traditional Japanese kimono coupled with a neon-lit city night that drew me in, and the stylized look of the picture. I wanted to recreate that with this and create a garish, lurid city-night scene. There's something that draws me to big cities -- an infatuation with the dazzling lights and loud sounds and the crush of people, or something. After image extraction/cleanup, I found a couple of stock photos from Stock Exchange of a Tokyo city night. I blended them together and used some effects to blur them and make them feel distant, not quite in touch, overly bright and saturated, and somewhat unreal -- because neon lights are like that. The blurred lights in front are from extended exposures of cars whizzing by -- the dangers that are inherent in a big city, and yet something else that draws people in.
I had fun making the title part of the garish neon boards.

Hmmm, I do not quite like this style of wall, cos I think it is too colorful and glaring >_<
And bcos of the neon colors at the bottom part of the wall, Junko looks like she had no 'body'.. And the sky looks very empty too...Hmm, but actually the colorful neon boxes at the side made a very interesting colors :D myb the part I dun quite like is the bottom neon colors :P

So is this like an urban elf or...perhaps a product of the prestigious DEN OF WONDERS?

I must say this is not your best wall of all time. The concept is very nice and all (I love Nana too) but I don't understand why you left the scan with so many artifacts and a strange skin tone. Doesn't look like you and your sense of detail and quality. The filters applied on the city lights look a bit cheap too, in my opinion. In fact I don't feel like any element of the wall blends with another, the whole thing looks like an old wallpaper you would have done when you wern't as good a waller as you are now. But the car neons are cool, I have to give you this.

    >_> I gotta agree with candy... this is not one of your best works...
it basically looks like you put in a stock photo, and motion blurred it.... then added that girl in...

i like the idea, having a traditional character with all those buildings behind her and lights... i think the concept is great... and the wall couldve been really good if ... >_> yeah ...

i'll be looking forward to your other walls...

Maybe not your best yet but the character seems a bit blurred with the rest of the bg maybe because its not as clear but the neon lights comtogetehr as one in this... Nice and simple. Great job as always! :P

I guess you're trying to make sometimes new, because this is very striking. And that's bad because it's too colourful. Scan looks a bit scary, and yeah, not one of your best. Keep up the great work.

The idea here is very good - the contrast between Nana in a traditional kimono and the city lights is also expressed in the manga. Gotta love Tokyo at night...

The colors are very pretty! I like the abstract "city scene" you created ^-^
