Ukoku Sanzo: Narrow Abberation

BACKCHAT: 31/05/07: For a long while now since my return to MT, I thought it would be an interesting endeavour to look again through the very first submissions within our gallery and review them in a modern and perhaps maturer light. Let's talk about this piece here for a minute:

The colours were all there. I like blues and water effects but what water and blue has to do with Ukoku Sanzo is relatively little save for an illustration Minekura produced within Saiyuki Reload Vol. 6 where Ukoku was shown smiling amid a backdrop of water droplets. Truthfully I didn't entirely get a chance to meet the character properly until I read Saiyuki Reload Vol 2 - 3 I'm still in love with the artwork. But that's just my passion for Minekura speaking. I know now that the Japanese character to the left of the work reads 'Darkness'. However, at the time, this work did what it had to even if I don't entirely agree with what it does right now.
UV
===============================

Dark & Stylish.

Priest Ukoku Sanzo, a man whose intellect proceeds his madness. Once a priest of the highest order, now known as Dr. Nii, a trump card in the hand of the Sanzo gang's adversary party. His intelligence and his instability illustrate him to be a diamond in the rough of diabolical minds. His fatal charm and mild manner confuses how he was ever a Sanzo priest and yet this stunning illustration serves to throw a stone in the lake of our reason.
This particular piece contains an original scan from a Reload manga novel as it's primary imagery. Ukoku's beautiful characteristics are adeptly illustrated here with his warm smile and desirable fingers nursing a cigarette. The force behind the water droplet and blood splatter effects was purely a twist of inspiration that amounted to this Noir artwork.

CG Rendering, multi-layered brush work and gradient effects have brought this simple but powerful piece to life. A pleasure to construct from start to finish.

Enjoy! :)

    Hi There Rene,
    That isn't a bubble over his eye and hands, that's a series of water droplets. I felt they gave the work an abstact effect. Indeed it is a little 'weird' and that's exactly what I was aiming for. :)
