I've been working on this image for a while. The image is off of the Japanese
DVD2 cover, which features an adorable image of young Kino. (I want the
rerelease of Japanese DVD 2 too, it has a new picture of young Kino that's
absolutely cute.) After a quick vector it took a while to create the background.
I wanted to recreate the scene from episode 4, with Kino admist the red flowers,
and so I traced flowers and petals off of various screencaps to get that effect.
The sky's clouds are recycled from my Kino "True Blue Skies" image and
the birds are recycled from my FMA "On Wings of Hope" image. The birds
are there to symbolize Kino's philosophy: If a
person watches a bird flying in the sky... surely they will get the urge to
travel.
The title comes from the prologue/epilogue to novel 3, a story which also serves
to bracket anime episode 4. The story is called "Within a Sea of Red:
Blooming Prairie".

ahh~ young Kino is so cute :3 nice recycling, and I love the reds, so purdie colors. the flying petals are great, perfect, but theres something wrong with the ones on the ground especially the ones onthe foreground, the middle of the flowers stand out a bit too much...meh...still very nice, like I said the colors are the major pluss here

I'll agree here-- I think the flowers'/petals' outlines should get thicker, too, the further forward they are. Just to provide extra depth.

I like this sky. It is simple and good. The flow of a petal is nice. and great many red flower!! She is surrounded by the flower and looks fortunate. I thought until now that, as for her, Kino was another person.

the petals in the air are awesome~
but like some others say.. those on the ground looks weird.. maybe because all the petals looks joined and seem to have different colour from those in the air
