My entry for the second round of MT knockout (Looking Forward, Looking Back).
Annnnnnd now I can vomit all my thoughts behind this wall on you all, so prepare yourselves.
I figured using this scan was a bit of a risk, since it could come off as just a literal, physical interpretation of the theme if one had never seen the movie. The image spoke for itself in the end, though, so I'm glad I went with my gut.

The resources I used --
Scan:
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time#572448

Lyrics: Drive - Incubus
Texture: http://zentextures.com/tagged/grunge/page/3

The movie this scan is from is The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (if you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it). Now, the rest of my spiel contains some spoilers, so read @ your own discretion (or better yet, go watch it and come back).

Spoiler (show)

Basically, it goes: the main character, Makoto, is your typical high school girl. She goes to school, is an average student, and likes playing baseball with her best-bros, Chiaki and Kousuke (paraphrased from the MT summary). One day, she discovers that she has the ability to "leap through time" (i.e. - she can go back in time by jumping). Like every good highschooler would, she abuses this ability to the utmost degree -- using it to have more time to study, to get home in time to eat the pudding her sister stole previously, etc. etc. you get the gist. However, throughout the entire movie, she also uses it various times to get out of awkward situations with Chiaki (hint: it's about luuurve). At first, there are no noticeable ramifications from her time travel, but we begin to see small mishaps occur as indirect results of her leaping as the movie progresses.
It's been a while since I watched it (definitely plan on rewatching after this) so the details are a bit hazy, but the consequences of her meddling with time gradually escalate, and they culminate in a disastrous accident.

I won't outright spoil the ending, but what I got from it was this: because Makoto was so intent on keeping things the way they were, she ultimately lost what she had, and lost out on what she could have had. It warns against the dangers of clinging to the past and being too afraid to move forward.

The feel I had hoped to achieve with this wall was one of bittersweet nostalgia – that of a Makoto who has realized her mistakes and looks to the past fondly, but is ready to go on now, towards Chiaki who is already in the future. I’m not completely satisfied with it, but I hope I was at least somewhat successful with conveying that mood.

tbh, I did get a tad lazy with this wall since I was in a rush, and it certainly is a style I've done before, to some extent, with Golden and Spies. However, I was really enamored with the scan, and I wanted to go with a flatter, more faded tone for this challenge. I...kind of forgot about the contest, and I started the wall the Wednesday before the due date (which just happened to fall on a weekend a friend was driving down to visit alsdjksklfjkfj x – x). 'Tis no excuse, though, so my apologies for the not-so-clean execution (and of course, the yellow. I'm sorry guys. I always seem to come back to yellow -- I'll try and control the urges better v - v).

+ kudos to my amazing opponent, Deto15 (you were someone I really admired -- and still look up to -- when I first started walling waaaay back in highschool). Your entry really blew me away, and I shall always be in awe of your ability.
+ thank you so much to the judges, for your kind words and constructive critiques c: I’ll definitely keep them in mind.

Ahh, definitely one of my favorite wallpapers from this round <3
I haven't seen the movie but the summary you provided definitely adds another layer of interpretation alongside the literal one (the more complex, the better IMO).
Don't really know what to say, you've already gotten a ton of feedback from the judges. I just really like this, plain and simple. Only thing I don't like about it is the lack of an HD resolution, gah. But I don't really have any complaints about the rest.
Fantastic work, and good luck in round 3! :)

    I'm loving this, as well. And just like Pande, I'm crying because there's no HD so I'll have to crop stuff, nuuuu ;_;

But seriously, also one of my favorite walls from this round. It all just goes together so well, and the interpretation is also very clear (and yes, more complex now that I also read about the movie summary xD). All in all, a very awesome, abstract-ish and interesting wall. Congrats on passing and good luck in the next round! :)

I remember seeing the movie a couple years ago. It was really nice and this wallpaper sums up the story and dilemma. Perhaps you could add some parts or enlarge it to HD size? Surely, more people would love it and use it on their desktop as it has already been requested.

You did a great job on taking on the theme very nicely and almost flawless. There is nothing I can say other than it speaks for itself. The text does the job in showing motion or putting the situation better on the screen. The colours are nice, perhaps yes a little less yellow would be nice. Not everyone likes the pastel/abstract/yellow popart style. It's still good and very clean though. Congrats on taking the king's seat this round!
