Wall 1 for Daystar Design's Birthday Bishie contest
I started this wall way back in April of 2009. I really wanted to do a painted wall although I hadn't done anything like that before and it looked really difficult. I consulted about a gazillion tutorials and references.
First I painted the hair, left it alone for a while, then painted the skin and then Ed's arm scared the crap out of me and I didn't touch it again until earlier this year, when I discovered SAI (I use GIMP). Painting is SAI is awesome and I am really happy with how the arm came out in the end, it's now one of my favourite parts. I did the arm, cape/coat, pants and bg in SAI.
Fave part: painting in SAI
Least fave part: exporting continually between GIMP and SAI. I'd lay down the base vector in GIMP using masks and
then paint/blend in SAI, but the only compatible file type is psd.

Bg scan: Chemin du Retour
The title is inspired by the theme of moving forward so important in FMA.

Ohh, I really like the background, the rail tracks are very pretty and those stones, too. I think his hair could be less messy and more detailed (or organized looking) but this looks really nice for your first try painting. The only thing that looks a bit weird to me is his pose - it looks like he's going to topple over any minute, lol. I'd make him straighter.
Other than that, nice job and good luck in the competition. I just may finish mine on time, haha. :D
I don't know if it's because of how you painted it but Ed seems very low quality to me.
I kept looking but I keep seeing grain and pixelated smudges on his cape and skin.
More gentle smudging could help to avoid that, try not to put the strength so high.
Also I agree with Alenas on the position, he looks really off compared to the walls perspective.
And the cloud behind him on the right is kinda random, it looks too out of place.

Ummmmm yeah, Im not being a hater but his right arm is his automail arm. Other than that great job ovo!
I do love this, its very nice. But ummm...it's his right arm thats the metal one, not his left. Other than that, this is amazing!
