My entry for MT Knockout 2010, I barely made it past round 1 >__< The theme was "welcome to my world"

When the round started, I already devised my idea and plan, which was to have the character "pop" out of the wall as if inviting the viewer into their world. And the idea of a book illustration coming to life followed from that, because when you're reading, it's as if you're in a different world. I love fairytales, I wanted to do Alice in Wonderland at first, but this scan of the little mermaid had the expression I had in mind. I changed her arm position to a more of a beckoning one, which was stolen off another POP scan

So yeah, I had this great idea and plan like 2 days after the competition started. And then I procrastinated. I got sucked into my DS thanks to Phoenix Wright XD And then come the last weekend before the wall was due, I went "crap, I need to work on it!"

I originally wanted to use Sai and make it all shiny, but I ended up using ArtRage + Marker tool ( + openCanvas for line) because it has the "storybook illustration" texture. I admit I totally got lazy with the background (ie behind Little Mermaid) X.x I originally wanted to put a castle or something, but got lazy... The text is paraphrased from the original Andersen version of the story ^__^

I also originally wanted to have a hand at the corner of the book, as if it's the viewer/reader's hand. But it looked too crowded, so I took it out.

Note to self: don't procrastinate this time X.x

You wanna know what the freaky thing is?! I was gonna do something like this for Round 1! I swear!
I don't understand why this didn't get a higher score. It's totally awesome and really well done. I love the soft colors!

Alice in wonder would have been a good theme but it will take quite some time to do :D Love the soft colors ! Good job.

    Have a nice day!

This is probably my favourite wall of yours - I adore it. The texture is amazing and it has a "maple" feel to it :P. Only thing is that I feel the book and the text seem a bit too "perfect", but it doesn't lessen the awesomeness of this wall 8). +fav

Such lovely mermaid. And the truth is beautifully looked as if she leaves the book. Only in a place where the tail falls outside the limits an illustration of a few colour more brightly

The character is so cute and it really soothes the theme of the first round!+fav!

OMG this is so cute. I love the soft watercolor style of the painting, and it looks awesome for her tale to be coming out over the pages of the book. Super awesome.

Hey hey, long time no comment, but I had to say something as soon as I saw this cause it caught my eye straight away. This is just adorable! XD I'd love to see some water coming off of her tail as well, and I think the book would look better with a touch more shading and texture. Great colours, and a great idea. Good work Maple, this is a beautiful wall! :D

I really, really adore this wallpaper! When I first saw it, I was like, "HOMG she's coming out of a book!" *excited*

I knew for sure that cool/modern wallpapers would be the most popular, and I thought that nowadays, making a modern wall for the theme was actually more cliche (no offense intended!). So I really love this classic idea that you did. I admit total defeat! 8)

This entry is another one of its own kind and I think it was done well. I'd have to also make a point about the scoring - I think maybe because the judges possibly already had this idea/ expectation in mind - but never mind that, great wall :3
