"All Saints Night" at Mexico, well it's not...but something similar. The girl is holding a cempazuchitl bouquet, the traditional flower for this day. I made another drawing with the same subject in previous years, but this is the first "no dark or sad" one. Dia de Muertos is my favorite Holly Day: bread, cempazuchitl, dinner with our dead ones, "calaveras", altars...bread again...is delicious!

More info!

"Dia de Muertos" means literally "Dead ones day", it's a Mexican holly day (November 02). That day we build altars in home for our love ones who have died, the altars are decorated with cut paper (purple, pink, black an orange)of many figures, candles, traditional bread, cempazuchitl flowers, food, water and many other symbolic things, including sugar and chocolate skulls...oh, and of course, a photo of the deceased relative. Tradition says that night, the dead will come and eat the offering of the altar. During the day or even night, the family visits the grave of the deceased, clean it, place flowers and eat or dinner right there. Lot of people hire a band or mariachi to perform favorite songs of the deceased.
That's how we remember our love ones.

Media: watercolor and ink over bond paper, background in Photoshop.
Time: 3 hours.

I like the cutout look that you did with the background, and the pattern too.
Overall, I think this is a simple, but very charming work, and it's refreshing to see hand drawn lines instead of the crisp digital ones.

Love the oranges and purples in this one. So complimentary! XD In addition, I like her umbrella (I like to collect bright/fun patterned umbrellas) as well as the dress design.
