ABOUT THE WALLIE:: Listened to a lot of music by The Birthday Massacre for this one.
I DID NOT filter or brush whore the picture D: The tree is naturally beautiful. And so are the stock photos. Because I blended them and overlayed a layer it kinda made all the colors mix mashy. I USED BRUSHES. I used the default brushes. I colored some places back and it made this weird magic distorted green mossy feel around the tree of the wallie. Credit to stock photos from stock.xchg and adobe cs4 for its default brushes are on the wallie.

You've got a cool, bittersweet concept there, my friend. :) And I love the smoky feeling.. The fiery glow behind the black smog makes me think of a ferocious fire.. or a scorching sunset peeking out behind storm clouds. I would like to think it's both, to go with your theme..
Like the misty touch of the colours. Something about the oily mix of blue and green and black makes me think of Pollution.. you know like a puddle of oil and its rainbow reflections.. beautiful-ugly thing making 'wow' sunsets but so much dirt, so much pain.. *Drifts off fantasising about Good Omen's albino Pollution* Ahem, sorry that's from a book I read. *nervous laugh*
Now for criticism. The character's cute and the contrast of hope and despair is sweet but she doesn't fit in with the background. >_< Maybe u could use another layer to darken her 'glow' a lil? With shadows at where she perches on the branch because after all light is coming from the left.. So she could have these dark shadows at the right, esp at the side of her head and her robe, and glow orange from the sun rays..
The text might be better a lil brighter. you can keep the misty effect still, it just need to be a bit more distinct so we can see it. And maybe nearer to the character so it looks like it's her thoughts?
The tree is also getting a bit 'lost' in the mist. Don't get me wrong, I love the fog and the tree's texture! But it would e nice if the branches 'disappearing' could be more silhouette-like instead.. Another layer to darken them a bit? Oh and if just to be technically correct, that middle branch reaching out towards the fiery bit, could be a tiny bit lit up at the leftward edges...
I hope this makes sense. >_< I think u did a magical job with the mist/clouds and the fiery gold! Just a lil more to make it more perfect.. I am merely suggesting, not everything mustbe followed! I'm not a dictator. Heheh.
