(...)--------------------------------------(...)

I cry and weep as I lay broken
For now I know what's been my token ...

I danced, I jumped, I played my part
Never have I gave you reasons to doubt my heart,
Guided by the strings you worked all from the start
I've been your moving work of art.

I was your doll, a painted face,
A simple toy, a marionette,
One that played your fake duet ...
Oh, how I now regret ...

You had my heart, you were my soul,
Yet for you I meant no more then a table stool;
A dancer who could entertain,
One that you could not maintain.

My strings are cut, my feet are crushed,
Among the others I fell as but a weed.
I wish to cry ... I have no tears
Only memories that keep me threw the years.

I'm just a doll, one defected marionette,
One that died with a broken heart ...

Picture and poem go together ...

Been a little melancholic lately, so I turned to art for consolation. I wanted to make something different from my current "usuals", and this was the result.

The line art is old, very old (made some time before December 2007 when I was still addicted to Princess Tutu AMVs) but the coloring was done today. Nothing fancy, I wanted to make this simple and draw the viewer's attention to the little broken marionette in the center.

I wanted to express the feeling of despair, the defected doll being left alone, forgotten by the puppeteer among the other props. Before she became defected, she was the star attraction of the show, and she believed that the puppeteer loved her just as much as she loved him. But then, one day, because of the puppeteer's own neglect, she fell, breaking her feet and having her strings cut. Instead of fixing her, the puppeteer simply placed her in the lot along with all the other broken dolls. She then realizes what a fool she's been for believing him and wishes she could cry. But as we all know, puppets can't cry ...

And that was the main idea for this. The idea may sound stupid, but I liked it. A puppet that had human emotions ... I think I read to many Anderson fairy tales =P And come to think of it, someday I may draw some pages for this. Who knows?

p.s. Listened to the song The Sacrifice (Michael Nyman) all way threw the coloring process. I don't know why, but I think it suites it "till the core".

oh, saw this in DSC's GB, but never clicked on it until now for some reason (been meaning to, though)
I like the cartoony look coupled with the dark atmosphere, it's great atmosphere fitting for the premise.

I think the puppet's right arm is slightly longer than her left, though it might just be perspective, or I don't know.

Nice and simple lineart, really effective. Your coloring is great, as well as the lighting, and i love the bg characters :). I don't think it looks so sad, it's more like she's asleep, and there is this beautiful golden light falling on her... though some of the bg characters are frightening ^_^.

Anyway, good job, and nice textures too :D
