My very first wallpaper submission. This is for the GSA Summer Picnic Battle. Whew, finally finished. I was afraid I couldn't complete it since I had to put it away to revise for my exams. This comment on the wall is really going to suck, since my brain is going to sleep now, so what I'm saying might not make sense here. -_-
I really wanted to make something with the three of them in it. There is a sad dearth of wallpapers with the trio in it, and if the wallpapers do, they usually have other characters as well. (lol) I wanted to try my hand at mixing different scans in vectoring, and besides, it'd be weird to have people in uniforms going on a picnic, and while Shinn and Luna both have scans with them in casual clothes, Rey doesn't have much in that department. Probably none to speak of if you minus all the ones with suits. XD Shinn probably doesn't look as detailed as the other two, since I had to rush through with him (started vectoring him yesterday and I'm not exactly fast), so I omitted some parts.
The grass was made using the Paths Tool and then vectoring a simple shape. I added brushes to the border of the grass layer in front, since a completely smooth border that's relatively close looks odd. I added a sun using the Supernova filter, and the clouds and birds are brushes again. I tried painting clouds, but it didn't really work out properly. Sky is just a simple gradient.
Aside from the characters, I also vectored the mat, basket and cupcakes. Stock photos for the basket and cupcakes are here and here, respectively. Added some wood textures to the basket. Vectored a windmill as well, from this screenshot of Pushing Daisies (Pushing-Daisies.com), because the background looked really empty...and it still looks hopelessly empty, but I have no idea what else to put in it.
Another texture was added to the overall image, since I didn't like the way it looked so smooth.
I was thinking of a background idea for the wallpaper, and it was this: What if they weren't soldiers? What if they were just regular kids, and all they had to do was worry about the recent test, maybe, or if their parents would agree to buy them the latest game? You know, normal life, without having to deal with the reality of war and the rigors of military training and fighting. Maybe they were good friends at school, and like good friends, going out together was one of the things they did, like here.
The title is derived from the Persona 3 FES ending song called Brand New Days, sung by Yumi Kawamura. The melody really does give off a refreshing vibe and the idea of a new beginning, which fits the wall, imho.
Program used: The GIMP 2.2
Time taken: About 8-10 hours (not counting the vectoring of the characters). Yeah, I'm really slow.

I don't think Luna goes well with the body. Her head is too smile. Background is pretty simple yet it's very nice to look at. The characters are in such a perfect scenery. Rey and Shinn there look awesome.
