I found a bunch of rather nice versions of the Aria characters in chibi style from one of the numerous Aria cds, and thought they were too cute to pass up. I figured I would kick off with the Aria Company characters first, and Akari won the toss of the coin.Another aspect of my choosing these characters is I have had a couple of interesting ideas to try with my traces, but all the images I was looking to vector either werenâ??t appropriate (Lunge with shiny hair didnâ??t seem right) or seemed too difficult for me to do well. In this case, I wanted to see how coloured lines would look on the organic parts of the trace, the hair and skin, as well as seeing how I could give the clothing and hair a lot more vibrancy than I was getting from simply using a gaussian blur on the highlighted and shadowed areas.
The highlights in Akariâ??s hair and on her uniform look nice, and as soon as I did it I was suprised at the result. The coloured outlines give more definition to the clothing, and the highlights in her hair look much more natural. If anything, the only part I may change is to use the same effect for the shadows, which look a little abrupt compared to the softer highlight transitions.
The last thing I did was with the logo on her hat. I tried tracing it directly from the image, but it always turned out too rounded and just looked bad. To get around this, I vectored a logo on its own, and simply warped transformed it into shape with Photoshop, then erased the excess. The result is much cleaner.
All in all, Iâ??m very happy with the way this turned out, and will likely use the same effects should I continue on and do the other characters.
