New Years Gift Series Part 2/3 - Hanabi Matsuri

Happy New Year to abul and moonescape! Two more of my best friends here :) May 2008 hold wonderful things for you guys~ Abul-kun, I doubt you're a fan of InuYasha but I know you prefer walls to vectors now so I wanted to give you a wall. And Moon-chan, as far as I know, you are an InuYasha fan, right? Anyways I haven't made anything from this series yet so here it is. I hope you like it :)

Exactly one year ago, I made a wallpaper with the same image. You can see it here. It's pretty bad, because I was still a beginner then. A year later, I can compare how I chose to wall this scan differently.

-Vector-
Was pretty straightforward; went well. My outlines are too thin >_< In the end I didn't have time to vector the designs on their kimonos so I used some patterns (I lurv patterns). Not much else to say about the vector I guess.

Original scan was kinda bad quality and had problems so it was a good image to vector.

-Wallpaper-
Heh, it's horrible. I know. Actually, I like the front part of the wall. But the back? Horrible. The fireworks look bad. The lake looks bad. The fireworks reflection looks bad. But meh, when you suck you suck.

I tried many different methods for the fireworks. I even vectored my own fireworks from scratch, but they looked too cartoony. In the end I settled for brushes even though I really didn't want to use brushes >.< I downloaded like, 50 different firework brushes until I found these ones. Nice fireworks are hard to find.

The water I painted from scratch. It doesn't look much like water, but...you can get the idea.

Anyways I know there's a lot of ways that this wall could improve. But I don't care now >.< I worked on it all night, now it's 1:15 PM and I give up. It is what it is. Better luck next time, ne?

Despite the horrible-ness I hope Abul and Moonescape still like their end-of-year gift :)

    *growls at Kagome*
    Awesome wallpaper!
I luv patterns too, they're pretty.
I like the vector, it's really well done.
Inuyasha is a boring anime (which I love due to my sweethearts Kik, Sessh & Naraku), but I'll stick at the wallpaper. The horizon looks a little... sudden? Maybe a blur or something to make it softer would've worked... or fog.
    But it's an awesome wallie!

It's beautiful! Don't say it's not good coz it's great! the bg is really nice and the fireworks look good! and I really like how u painted the water XD

wow they are so cute! Lovely vector! I especially love their dresses...How could you do them....no question....

  10. Chloe Retired Moderator Dec 29, 2007

    Thin lines are the best!
The vectors are awesome, but my main problems are the fireworks: they seem too low quality compared to the sharp vector. They might also be too big.
    Anyway, good job!

  11. saki-xan Dec 29, 2007

Omg your lines are extremely smooth! > <
Btw, I love all the wallpaper! *___*

  12. moonescape Dec 30, 2007

ZOMG, I can't believe you did this! :o I really wanted this to be vectored too and I'm so happy that you chosed it to be vectored plus its a gift to me. :o Ack, you make me feel so guilty and I did use to like Inuyasha, but not anymore as I love GSD and Code Geass (sometimes). ^_^'

This is really wonderful and I'm glad you made a redo of this scan + with different pattern design. =D

Actually iono what does Hanabi Matsuri mean? ^_^'

  13. rika23 Dec 30, 2007

i think hanabi matsuri is firework festival? xD *random guesses lol*
anyway, i like it xD pwetty xD

  14. zaira Dec 30, 2007

wow! its a fireworks festival! :D

  15. KiyanaIkebana Dec 30, 2007

    I love the vector! :)

  16. Devilet Dec 31, 2007

ah yes, fireworks, I remember attempting to do them a while ago. Couldn't find a good brush or a way to make them, lol.
You are right that the front is really good, I love the vector you did also, great as always.
I think maybe if you made the fireworks brush smaller, and raised them higher, then duplicate the brush layer and distort it, change the transparency so it blends into the water creating a reflection, something like that if it makes sense.
The water isn't that bad, it's really fine.
The grass would look better if it was behind the rails, because it's kinda transparent there.

I know this comment is a bit late, but I get lazy sometimes and/or forget D: Good job Ash!

    composition:
its nice to see wallpapers with more then just one character [even though mine are are mainly one charactered oriantated XD] and with the fireworks going off in the background, it adds to the scene as a whole with its festive outlook and brings about the joy in celebrating

    colour:
nice use of colour choices and especcially for the background since it matches nicely with the two characters and the vibrant colours in your fireworks only heightens the festive spirit. not only that but colourwise, it provides a nice atmosphere.

    quality:
its a bit jaggardy in some areas however, it's hardly noticeable [it's just something really small XD]. the vector is pretty good quality and the background is as well. and thin lines are nice XD

    uniqueness/creativity:
    love the patterns :D

    overall:
good composition and a good background, there really isnt much else to say XD

    other thoughts:
the railing isnt really much to my tastes and it would have been nicer if it didnt look so real compared to the characters. it just looks a little awkward however, the railing is still really nice.

    notes:
    yay for sparklers~^^
