Like Yuki though, I think the outlines could have been as soft as the background - instead of the black (or whatever) on low opacity stroke line, you can use a soft grey at 100% opacity. Then use an eraser at 30% flow or less and rub out the "ends" of the lines so the centre will be fatter - that way you will get a more natural looking line. After that you can play with the opacity X-P
