I have always regarded the relationship between a mother and a daughter very sacred.
I have always believed that our mothers role is the most important concerning our physical and mental development.
Have you ever thought of yourself being lucky for having a mother? I have. Especially now that she is not here.

Scenario:
Mariel: Mom will you read me a story please?
Mom: Sure sweety, which one do you want?
Mariel: Oh, great! I want the one with the fluffy cloud and the flying camelopardalis. I love this story!
Mom: Ok. Lets see. Hm, once upon a time in kingdom far away from here there was a kind little camelopardalis that wanted to fly.

Some kids never had and never will hear a story from their mothers mouth and receive that warm goodnight kiss.
This wallpaper is dedicated to all those kids.

Time: A week more or less
Tools: Mechanic pencil 0,5 and Adobe Photoshop CS3
Layers: 26
Wood Texture (for the table): http://hatch1921.deviantart.com/art/Wood-Grain-24243045
Shoes I liked and tried to draw: http://trufilla.deviantart.com/art/red-shoes-63677086
Hand Reference: My own hand (but now I do not have any nails. Bad habit of mine since I bite them XD)
Book: Quick vector. I am not good at vectoring, you know that XD
Brush for the pattern on little girls dress: http://ashyli.deviantart.com/art/Sakura-Tiru-31151629
Texture on the top: My stock used (if you want it just send me a note)
Picture on the book: My drawing 4 years ago for passing the exams in illustration with traditional media (colour pencils used). We had to create a picture based on a story or poem. I chose a book with funny poems written by Rena Rossi-Zairi (title: 321 counting with Rena)

Pictures that inspire me to draw the little girl like thumbellina and the whole scene:
Illustration by an unknown Russian painter: http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/5553/thumbellina3ph9.jpg
Illustration by Ada and Svetlin: http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/603/thumbellina4el4.jpg
I would like to say that I have more than 50 illustrations of thumbellina as it was one of the fairytales I had to evaluate on one of my essays at the University, so you could say that I have been influenced by lots of different characters and moods. I only present you those that I liked the most. I hope you like them too.

Ps 1. I would love to receive a stricked critique on this piece since I see the flaws myself but as I always say, I will not change the elements (certain characters or objects that mean something to me) that you do not like, but I will surely change everything else. Thank you all in advance.
Ps 2. I think that you must have forgotten me after being absent for more than 2 months. I am sorry.
Ps 3. Dedicated to Svetlin Vassilev, maybe the best Bulgarian Illustrator who i happen to have once watched draw and tried to follow his technique in details. My wallpaper is somehow a recreation of his own illustrations for the thumbellina storybook, so this piece is a gift for him.

The bond between a mother and a daughter is certainly very special, and this wonderful work of art communicates that idea in a very unique way. It brings back memories of when my mom used to read me fairytales ^__^

From the illustration in the storybook (which looks like it could be from a real children's book, I wonder what the story is about...), to those tiny red shoes, to the thumbellina-like girl, to the waterdrops on the leaves in the corner, every detail of every element is neatly created with care; and together, they create a magical and enchanting yet familiar and warm atmosphere. Amazing work mouritsa!

Such awesome detail! Love the colors and the idea is really neat. I think my favorite part of the wall is the bowl with the flowers. Very nicely done =D

Amazing... this is really a stunning piece of work. Love the detail work in the storybook. :) The only thing that I can see that looks a little off is the little girl. I think that the arm on the right should be moved over a tad more to the right because as it is now it makes her body look scrunched.

But overall, wonderful job on the colors and shading... and love the concept of mothers and daughters. Definitely a fav from me! :D

Ah I remember my mom used to read me fairytales as bedtime stories, and I still do love fairytales ^__^

Amazing work! I love all the details you've put in, like those red shoes, and the flowers in the corner (lily of the valley? I kinda associate those with my mom since they bloom in May, and mother's day and my mom's birthday are also in May) I love the way you've painted everything as well, it's so soft. :)

I also love the illustration in the book, looks so professional :) (though it does look a bit odd that both pages have the same illustration)

I thought that looked like Thumbelina from the thumbnail! (that's almost a tongue-twister!). The painting is beautifully done, you have a great style. This made me pretty nostalgic because my mother used to read me fairytales and other stories when I was little (I still love them! ;) ). It's a beautiful piece.

Great wallpaper! I love the scene that you created. Also I'm thinking about the deep feeling that you used in making this wallpaper.
It looks very sweet, and really shows the affection between mother and daughter.
Great work with the painting and vectoring, i specially loved the images of the book, it's very well made and well imaged, but everything else looks really beautiful too i really love it!
Congrats! This is a wonderful wallpaper! :)

Wow. I was working on a wall with a similar concept but all my motivations been sucked away because you've done such an incredibly good job on this. ^_^'

I love fairytales...Not only Thumbelina...but many many others and I also collect pictures like that...I am a fan of H.C. Andersen, the Grimm Brothers & Perrault. I also like Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan...I'm the eternal child. So you can imagine how I feel about this wonderful image. After reading its presentation I felt even more warmth towards it...And I felt sadness for the little children who cannot hear a fairytale from their mother's mouth. Your work is great because it awaks emotion in the viewer's heart and that is the purpose of art. I'm sorry but I cannot look at it objectively...I already love it.

The quality is great and there are no defects seen in the character edges as you zoom it.

  19. Swordlily003 Feb 22, 2009

Thumbelina is one of my favorite fairy tales and this picture is a perfect portrayal of it. ^-^
