The background was a photo taken with my camera (Canon EOS 400d), you can see that I edited it..

Well, I think you overdid on the brightness focused on the character and also the BG on the right, but overall it's good. ^^

I'm not quite sure what it is, though it may be the white glow around the scan's upper half, but the scan doesn't integrate well with the bg.
