The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight, over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding, riding, riding,
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

-- "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes

That is one of my fave poems/ballads. I love the imagery presented, as well as the story (so sad...). This vivid imagery from the first stanza of the poem struck me the first time I read the poem some years ago.

I also like Loreena McKennit's song adaptation of the poem (though she cut out a stanza) ^^

Watercolours, because I want to. It was harder than I thought to get the exact image from my head onto paper... at first I wanted some trees too, but couldn't get the perspective right, and didn't know where to put it, so I took them out.

I like how the clouds turned out ^^

    Beautiful mixture in color,
I love how to make the sky look
mysterious and nice how the cloud
    caress the moon.
    Great job <3

    I know I don't usually give comments on abstract/doujin section :D

But this is seriously nice. You really captured the panorama of the poem. I'm not really good at understanding them though. >__>

This made me want to go back and do art the traditional way. Watercolour!

    (The texture abit rough lol)

yes, i agree wholeheartedly too that this is truly a masterpiece to be highlighted :D A MUST! XD

this is something comparable to Shakespeare though. You seem to be a good illustrator to poems~ ....and this poem sends chill to my soul- i can feel its cold journey T_T

admiring this art while listening to nostalgic songs brings out the essence; carrying us into this art's world........

Lovely art piece MapleRose! When I look at the sky I see hints of Van Gogh's "Starry Night" or just an overall aura of impressionism. The colors are lovely and you did a great job with the light from the moon. The only thing I can find to critique would be that in contrast to the heavily textured sky, the land looks a little too flat. I also think there could be a few places where the path could be a tad more defined, but overall a lovely addition to the abstract art elite gallery! Keep up the great work!

Excellent work! Lovely use of colours and watercolours. You've really brought out the image portayed in the poem. I also agree with firefly on the textured sky, BUT it's not all that easy on watercolour, is it? Well done :D

    Awesome painting! ^_^
Ah, Highwayman. I read it when I was 8... wow, has it really been that long? Lovely portrayal of the poem.

Whoa! That's such a strange coincident! I read this story when I was in 7th grade and I had to do a project on it plus remembering the recital of it. :D

Your watercolours really bring out the beauty in this art. I must agree that I liked how the clouds turned out. It's alright! The perspective and idea of it went well. You portrayed it well.

I mean purple is my favorite colour. XD

Too bad there is a fingerprint (?) on the left side of the road. Otherwise it's really a great job, it looks like a field of heather, and i love how the road actually looks like a river. Really nice work on the sky and perspective ;)

    Thumbs up :D

PS somehow your watercoloring looks a bit like color pencil (if you check out julian1's drawings, you'll see what i mean... maybe it's because of the paper you used ?)
