So I was just looking around the Scan Gallery at AnimePaper and came across these two for Princess Mononoke.

Scan 1
Scan 2

The placement of the two and the angle were just so similar that I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Plus that empty space in front of the wolf was just begging to be filled.

The problem with compilation is that if you put a lot of work into it and get it right, no one believes that you even did anything. I'm still glad it came out as well as it did though there still are some things that could be improved upon. I really don't see many shots of both Ashitaka and Mononoke being bad@ss together so I wanted to accomplish that with this piece. Yes Ashitaka is supposed to be the "peace maker" and everything but... well... yeah, call it a moment of weakness on my part.

While I didn't vectorize the image, I did completely repaint San, Ashitiaka, the deer, and wolf since the scans were rather messy. I also re-inked Ashitaka since I had to shrink him down and intensified all the shadows on him to fit the surrounding environment. Then I painted him a normal arm, a few more arrows, and his scar.

The fire was made completely by me and was certainly the most enjoyable part of this endeavor. I had never done fire before so it was a new challenge. I was really trying to capture a "moment in time" with this, thus the blur effect to give everything more movement. So many walls nowadays are just some character standing wistfully in front of a pretty sky or design (though I have no problem with those). I wanted to really give more action to this piece.

I had planned on making a longer title but... I dunno... personally, I don't think it needs more. War is such a short word but it signifies so much. Love, hate, anger, pain, death, fear, freedom, oppression, desire for peace. So many feelings that can be expressed by a simple, three letter word. I was worried that the text would really flatten the depth of the image but I think it worked out fine. I made it small because in a way I wanted to signify how the word itself can not seriously emote the horrors that arise from it. We take the concept of war so lightly at times; in text books, video games, movies, and the daily newspaper. I wanted to bring that concept forth as well.

Went for the widescreen effect again because Miyazaki is just that epic. Truth be told, I worked on this piece and didn't attempt to crop it to a wall resolution until finishing. I couldn't bring myself to nearly cutting the thing in half to abide by the necessary wallpaper sizes. So instead I gave it the movie appeal. I had half the mind of just putting it up at Widescreen 1920x1200 but decided that it would then be unusable by a majority of the populace on AP. I'm afraid I don't know how to post up more than one resolution on here (I tried checking the AP Guide but found nothing). If someone has any pointers on how to do it, I'd be happy to post up a widescreen version. My apologies.

It's a very intense image so I can understand why it might not be considered good "wallpaper material" seeing as it might be rather busy on your desktop. Nonetheless, I did enjoy making this piece and am glad that I finished it. Please tell me what you think if you have a moment. :)

...and I apologize for the long post ><

this is yet another proof that you do not need to vector to get a high quality wallpaper. The recreation of the scene is done seamlessly with a great attention to detail. Make sure your desktop doesn't miss this epic wallpaper!

I downloaded this over at AP as soon as I saw it. It is seriously one of the BEST wallpapers I have ever seen. You wouldn't be able to distinguish this from a cell from the animation (except that this is better!), the two scans you found work flawlessly together. I love the fire you added to it, it's incredible. I also LOOOVE the letterbox format you chose to present it in, this is truly a beautiful piece of artwork you have created, in fact it's already on my desktop (although, I have a 1920x1080 screen...but I didn't crop this I left it as is, in all it's glory xDD). Absolutely great work here!

love the work. My only critique would be to make the two pics (of san and ashitaka) to be more like the BG boars in that they are "moving" so should have signs of movement similar to the boars. just a thought. Thanks for sharing this ! Very cool :)

Holy crap, at first I thought this was a scan! It really does look like something right out of the movie. It's amazing how much effort you put into this. I only wish it were a bit larger >_< This is very impressive and really captures the intensity of battle. I look forward to more excellent wallpapers from you.

Wow O_O this wallpaper is one of the best wallpapers I've EVER seen. The colors, the feeling that they're really moving... this wallpaper sends shivers down my spine. Definitely a fav, I'm in shock, there are very few walls that really impress me, and this one surely did. Good work ^_^

Very nice work. The two scans have been flawlessly put together and the blurs themselves have been very well produced. It's great. Nice work there :)

  14. anji Feb 11, 2007

I'm glad to see a really nice new Mononoke Hime wallpaper. This movie is not enough wall XD
I've read your description and it's great that you took the time to explain all your process. I like that.
You created a great movie scene. I love action scene. I don't have anything to add ;)

Awesomely cool. I agree very much that your wall has a feeling of movement frozen in time. You've used the blur effect beautifully, though I would have to say that I wish Ashitaka's face was as crisp (in focus) as Mononoke's - it makes his elk seem to be where the main focus is instead of on him. There's also the one boar smack-dab between the two humans in the background which is crisp as well. I think that you may want to extend the blur to this boar as well, just to keep it consistent. To me it seems like the focus is on the two humans, so it's weird to see the one boar in crisp "focus." Besides those two cents worth: You executed the use of a blur technique very well, so no qualms with it's application. :)
And all I have to say about putting two separate scans together into one? Kudos. Kudos. Kudos. They blend awesomely together Yes, I believe you, but still, you repainted Ashitaka's arm!? @_@ And put these two completely different scans together seamlessly?! Naw. I don't believe you. ;) But you really did. Wow. I even recognized the scanned images and didn't think a thing of them when I was looking at your masterpiece of a wallpaper. So a very good job done goes to you. Thanks for all the work!
Btw, it was interesting to read your "long" description, so don't worry that people don't read them, but I think that there is a paragraph near the bottom that you meant to direct just to AP, so you may want to remove it from MT. ;)

  16. whimura Feb 16, 2007

    Awesome!

The only thing that I can say without repeat anything someone already said above is Im simply speachless. Directly to my Favorites. Thanks for sharing this work us.

  17. pengi-san Feb 17, 2007

Completely awesome. You can't even tell they were two separate images to begin with. And you're right about how if you do the job well people don't think you did anything at all. It's the curse of this business. :) Very well done. I am somewhat disappointed you don't have any more submissions for me to download... ;)

  18. epherlite Mar 04, 2007

This is truly a master blend, I think you really achieved what you set out to do. It looks like an unused movie still, that it was animated together. You've done a fantastic job on this.
