EDIT: Super
Happy FunFun PNG Formats + comparison to original scan!
In a time when people are vectoring like mad to achieve a crispest effects, or painting like made to achieve the
smoothest effects, I have decided to take a step back and wholy embrace the unloved quanta of digital art, the pixel, in
all of its boxy glory. Thus I present to you a vision of what Katamari Damacy would have looked like had it been
released 10 years ago -- in other words, Katamari Damacy meets SimCity 2000.
This wall began when I was browsing the Namco site looking for some refs for a simplistic "Katamari Crossing"
type of wall I had in mind, but when I saw this wall with the Prince rolling a katamari through a city, the composition
reminded me of isometric pixel art. Never one to pass up an opportunity to try a new style, I decided to recreate the
wall as pixel art. After reading a few articles from Computer Arts Showcase and staring at the top pixel artworks from
DeviantArt, I jumped right in.
There were about 30 'base' buildings. It took the better part of a month to make them all and then populate
the city, building it up like Legos. Definately the most detail-intensive wall I've ever made.
I need to learn a lot more about isometric pixel art. I still can't get the hang of lighting and how the heck
you're supposed to add highlights.
The name of the wall is a play on the "We Heart Katamari" name.
I realize that this image makes an utterly awful wallpaper. I mean, where the heck did my icons go?
Still, it was an extremely fun experiment. I even hid myself in the wall.
Just goes to show, you're never too old to learn a new technique.
More resolutions at DA! Desktop Anime. I highly recommend
viewing the 1920x1200 version first, no matter what resolution you end up using, since that's the one where you can
see all the details I put in.

Wow!
The detail in this is purely astounding (all the little windows, roof slats- just everything... and and... a giraffe
<3) and controlled to a level where it seems machinelike- every pixel is perfectly located in the right place- O_O
Really, a tremendous and super fun wallpaper you must see!

That was the exact reaction I had when I looked at this in full-view. Down.
Right. Awesome.
It's like what a high resolution Nintendo game on the NES would have looked like. lol I think that you got the
coloring down pretty good, and if you're wanting to simulate old-school graphics I really don't think any
shadows/highlights are needed beyond what you already have. The tree shading down at the bottom of the wall in the
middle - a perfect example of a good use of color - look just like I remember 8-bit games looking like.
There is one thing I noticed which is in relevance to the Katamari/ball. When they're rolling up things as large as
buildings in the game the ball is already completely covered with other stuff and you really can't see the ball
anymore. And while I know it would make the workload on this wall even higher, that's my two cents. Though I will
concede if Katamari balls are like you've depicted in the second game (seeing as how I have only played the first).
If this is the case, just ignore the aforementioned comment. ^_^'
When I first looked at the wall the roads where the houses used to be confused me at first. Just for the sheer fact that
there aren't any roads going to the buildings adjacent - except for the main roads/city blocks. The roads right now
made me think of a elongated oval, and I didn't think of the lines as roads until I thought about it. Adding small side roads or just adding more connecting roads to the city (especially on
the northwest side of the plucked-up houses) would pull the exposed roadway into the city better, and would make the
roadways easier to recognize what they are.
Anyway, the amount of work you put in on this is incredible, and I applaud your effort for tackling new styles. You
pulled it off great! Did you put yourself in a building window somewhere? (It's too late here for me to even
attempt to look - it's a "Where's Waldo" game. ;) Fun, I'll have to look later.) Thanks a lot
for sharing!

EWW PIXELS!
lol it's Where is Charlie katamari version @_@
*tries to find tama*
-
Oh My god! ........ You made this? Its fantastic! Love pixel art! First time seeing one on MT.
-
Neato design and concept. I like it a lot.
-
Geez Tama! You have way too much time to spare! LOL
It's great to see something new around. I wouldn't attempt such a feat because I'd die in the process of
making one. But, awesome job on it. If you wanted to be really pickey, I suppose you could have shaded the areas between
the houses x_x but really, I don't think anyone would even look at it.
-
zomg details! @-@
nice experiment, though I kinda understand why not a lot of people use pixel-art for wallpapers because your icons
disappear instantly :D
anyways, neat buildings, though I find it kinda strange that the red ball thingy casts shadows but the building and
trees don't...

this is fucking win is all i really have to say
-
I love this wallpaper to death. You've really outdone yourself on this one, Tama!

AWESOME job!
-
How long did this take you? A month?!
But still, this is a really neat idea and the detail is awesome. Excellent job!
-
Simply put, this is amazing. The level of detail blows me away and the concept of putting everything isometrically is
way too cool T_T
-
Wow! This is so amazing, I've never seen anything so detailed in my life! This must have taken you forever! I envy
your patience. =3
-
That city just got owned.
Excellent work, and congratulations upon the nomination of this paper of yours to Highlighted Item, Tama-Neko. Please
keep up the good work. :)
-
This is some insane work xD Yeah, I can't use this as a desktop 'cause I'm an icon whore, but if I
didn't have any I would totally use. Details and colors look hot XD As crap said, totally fucking win >xD
-
Wonderful piece of work! I find that every katamari wall I find here is always from the best of the best of minitokyo.
Great job, thank for your hard work!
-
That's just crazy. And great. And I have never played Sim City before, but it's still awesome.
-
My first thought from this was "Whoa, did someone screenshot Sim City and vector it?" But I can see that this
is not a vector! That is some amazing pixel art! All the details are incredible! This must have taken ages to do. Kudos
to you for the hard work! It paid off!
-
I know this is katamari damacy. (And I <3 katamari). But as a gamer for all this time, this somehow makes me feel
nostalgic. Your concept is just too wonderful (used for want of a better word) for me to put to words.
