Hello everybody! I wanted to make something ever since the new year, but I couldn't think of anything, until I came across this Tony Taka scan. I was thinking of something that would suggest a new start, since the new years allows us all to restart from scratch (in a way). Yea, it's a bit late for this, but hey, better late than never!
The character scan and BG scan were pretty different in style, so I worked a lot with filtering, hue/saturation and levels to match the background with the scan. To add a greater sense of depth/perception, I tried to create a sense of focus by using blur effects to the farther reaches of the environment. Also, I added mist over the lake, and some flowing down the valley, to give the effect that it is just past morning. As for the difficulties, I would say it was the extraction of the char scan, especially getting rid of the dust at the bottom of the scan and making it un-noticeable that I removed it. Then there were a few parts at the top right corner of the background that were dirty and needed some patch-work to make it look less like a scan and more like a background. All in all, I think I did a pretty job in mending the two images together considering the scans had different art styles.
Personally, I really like how it all turned out, though I couldn't have done it without Lordwe, Sailorchin, and most of all SOUL-BLADE. I couldn't have gotten this far without your help! I appreciate the input and feedback you provided and all the constant support :D Give yourselves a pat on the back, or I'll pat it for you :)
So for the technical parts:
Time: approx 6-7 hours
layers: 8 layers (I don't really like working in big number of layers, but I should probably start doing it
Tools: Photoshop CS2 - air brush, eraser, smudge/blur, various filters, levels, saturation/hue, healing brush/patching,
stamping...I think there might be more, I don't remember ^_^'

i like the nice background scenery however it seems a bit too real compared to them but it could just be the way im looking at it [hope i didnt offend you ^_^'] i like the nice atmosphere created and the title is really interesting XD nice wall ^^

he/she is going into more eechi worl although it is nice.Alright lets get down to business. You wanted a rating/crtique on your art? I havent done it for quite some time (MT poeple need some rest too you know).
For me, I've seen many versions of this made by different people but yours by far is the best i've seen as in an earthly form whereas others have the scan placed in clouds, mist.... so on. wait WTF the scan looks like Hime Mononoke. The quality and the style look like those of the Ghibli studio. Oh well it was a good anime. But im sorry to say that the background doesnt not suit the picture much although the foreground: grass, ground, misty does. Its just that there is no indication in the scan that they care about the town behind them, rather they are looking onwards, forwards.
But I guess that It can comply to your title 'A new beginnning' as in the sense they are leaving town and starting something new.
As for quality, excellent job. I have seen this scan many times and it has awesome quality. You did the background good also.
Well, lets see... i give my ratings out of 10. So you would have to have scored a:

Oh, it is lovely. It looks sooo nice... The butterflies are beautiful and so is that thing she is holding (is it a keychain or a bracelet with a star?). Very nice. Good Job. :) Oh also, her eyes look really pretty and I'm adding it to my favorites.
