Murrue Ramius of Gundam SEED/Destiny.

This is more of an experiement really, to see if I could paint clouds... and I ended up kinda liking it.

Anyway, I started out by re-CGing my vector: Archangel Girls by MapleRose to get a softer, painted style instead of anime cell-shading. I merged the layers on the hair and skin and used the smudge and soften brush to blend the shading, as well as using the 'darken' brush to add additional shading. Then I took out the cellshading in her clothes, and brushed in the shadows (and used the 'darken' brush a bit). I kept the outlines though, but changed from black to brown so they're not so stark.

Then came the background. Like I said, I wanted to see if I can try to do painted clouds.

First try: brushed in the colours and shading with pretty high opacity, big, soft brushes, then used the smudge brush to blend. Turned out to be an ugly smudged mess, didn't like it. Deleted layer.

Second try: brushed in the colours and shading with big soft brushes, then used 'soften' instead of 'smudge'. Again, blurry mess with no definition whatsoever. Deleted layer.

Third try: decided to do something different, like doing stock paintover instead. Tried using Terragen, but couldn't get fluffy enough clouds. So went around the Internet, but still couldn't find the perfect picture, but found something semi-okay. Painted over the stock, didn't like how it turned out, the colours were bleh, and the shapes weren't what I had in mind (not fluffy enough). Deleted layer(s).

Fourth try: Oh what the heck, might as well start from scratch and see how far I'd get. Used less opaque and harder brushes, lots of in-between colours by eyedropping constantly while painting. Also, resisted all urges to use the smudge or soften brush, instead forced to use colours to blend. Ended up with something okay, but rather... well, not soft and fluffy enough, esp at the edges: [link]. So finally gave in, duplicated layer, used median filter and lowered opacity slightly. There, slightly more blended and softer.

At first I wanted to add some more stuff like water or something at the bottom, but the angle for that looks wrong, so decided to add some mist and be done with it.

So yeah, my crappy attempt at painting clouds... still not enough definition or textures... and the shapes of the clouds are pretty bad 'cause I was going at random... But I sort of ended up liking it, esp how my re-CGed vector turned out. And I'm sort of proud of how I could sort of paint clouds from scratch...

[Edit] Fixed her nose, made it slightly darker and less-smudged.

The clouds are really cool. The nose is a bit blurry, but the painting is really neatly done. Great job!

Wow! Yuor second time painting. It's hard because I tried and didn't turn out well. I do like the shades in the cloud and the concept of this wallpaper. I'm glad you used your own vector you made and the idea of painting style was creative. A definate fav. ;)

Definitely wow, like moonescape said :) You did put a lot of time and effort in your wallpaper, but I think it was worth it! Congratulations! I love the soft shading on Murrue's clothing, and the clouds in the background look fab!
