Grave of the Fireflies, the live action movie, is extremely depressing. In fact, I even think it makes Japanese citizens look bad. If the filmmaker was trying teach us that we shouldn't have war, he failed. This movie only tells us that in war, even the nicest people turn into devils. And I'm talking about citizens against each other, not the enemy...and that's not always the case. In this movie, loving moms would let other children starve, even if they are family. By the time we come to the last third of the movie, I had no sympathy what-so-ever for a mom who would do such a thing. And the movie made it look like Japanese people will turn into dog-eat-dog mongrels during perilous times. I don't believe my Japanese friends would ever do that.
Anyway...I don't recommend the live action version of this story. The actors gave amazing performances, my hats off to them. But after seeing that tiny little girl suffer and die like that, with no one in that village willing to help, I simply could not sleep well that night. This movie doesn't make me hate war, it makes me dislike people. And I don't want to live that way.
Anway...that's my take on it. If you want to stay hopeful of a better world someday...don't see this movie. -
