Review:
Form|code is, in a word, sophisticated. The collection comes in a sleek plastic
slipcase whose design matches the design of the cover of the collection itself,
which is held together by locking rings. This four-ring binder design, a
signature design of sorts for Murata-san, is both classy and functional, and it
also allows for some creative touches that
wouldnââ¬â¢t be possible in a more
traditional binding. For example, unlike the
ââ¬Åregularââ¬Â
Limited Edition copies, the Wani Special Limited Edition came with a special
print that was signed and numbered by Range Murata himself that can be easily
inserted into the binder.
The artwork itself is divided into three sections, the first of which are the
twenty-four color prints that are the showcase of the collection, each
reproduced individually on heavy paper. As in futurythm, these prints feature
characters (mostly female) from the entire spectrum of Range
Murataââ¬â¢s creative vision, from the
mundane to the fantastic. It is amazing how much detail he is able to capture
and how much emotion he is able to convey in each of the prints, from coquettish
playfulness to profound melancholy, much of it reflected in the extraordinarily
expressive eyes of his subjects alone. While there are quite a large number of
talented character designers in Japan, certainly none are quite as good as Range
Murata at capturing feeling in the gaze of individual characters.
After the prints come selections of promotional artwork, from posters, magazine
covers, calendars, and the like. Of particular note are fold-out enlargements of
the covers to the first four volumes of the Robot art anthology, which Range
Murata compiles and which lists prominent manga-ka such as Yoshitoshi ABe as
contributors. The third section highlights some recent non-character art works
of Range Murata, from a small folder full of concept sketches, including an
Ikea-style layout featuring a chair featured in one of his prints, to a catalog
of clothing and accessories that he has designed.
As a bonus, there are two books inserted at the end: after service, a collection
of sketches that appeared in Kairakuten, the weekly Wani magazine, from June
2001 to May 2003, and futuregraph, a collection of color works that appeared in
Kairakuten from June 2003 to February 2006.
Thank to Eugene from Minuial.net by this excellent review.
