"FLAME OF THE VALKYRIE" is a painting passed down from generation to generation.

It depicts a legend about the main matriarch of the family.
The legend starts with the birth of twin sisters. One sister grew up to be homely and raised a large, loving family.
The other sister cared for no such thing and decided to fight along side the men in defence of her country.

During the final battle of The Great War, the warrior sister heard news that the northern nomads were headed towards the family castle.
Having heard this, she raced to the aid of her twin sister but by the time she arrived, the entire family was slaughtered.
Falling into a berserker rage, she kills every last nomad and ends the bloody 10 year war that plagued the land.
Immediately afterwards, she finds the body of her sister holding a weapon defending the life of her baby girl.
Having no more tears to shed, she decided to give her sister a viking type funeral.

As she stood there watching the flames dance, she heard the cry of a baby.
By a motion of fate, the twin sister of the slain baby girl survived.
From that day forward, the warrior sister was a warrior no more.
She lived the rest of her life in her families castle, in peace, and raised that girl as her own.
This is the story told the rich lady to all her other rich friends about the painting framed in gold hanging above the fireplace.

This is the back story i came up with for this particular entry in the third and final round in the TREC contest. I was searching around for a scan and came across this one which i thought was pretty painterly and interesting. Once i extracted her, i had absolutely no idea what to do next. I was fumbling through the net and found some pics i thought i could use. I took a stock photo of a cathedral and a torch (the little one on the bottom) and integrated them but it was still lacking. I sampled colors from a photo taken at dawn for the background and edited a photo of a forest fire for the large bonfire in the middle. Then came the part i love. I re-engineered the drawing and made it color coordinate with everything else. I'm sure there could be tons of tweaks for me to do but i really like what i ended up with.

Thanks to antti999 for the scan

for one thing , the scan really goes well with the stock *_* good job on that ~
but the cathedral is a lil blurry . the sky looks quite nice and the colours are really nicely blended .
but I was wondering , there seems to be a tree-like figure behind the bonfire . is it supposed to be in the fire ? :P just a thought . perspective is good and extraction is top-notch ~
    great job artgeek ~

whee! I'm finally here! Been a bit busy lately and just forgot to do a lot of stuff.

Anyways, I was going to just say this is a classic "+FAVE" kind of work. The thing that's so great about this is that the fire in here looks GOOD. So many people can't pull off fire and it looks like crap... but you did it SOOOO well <3

*points up* I'm not sure about the blurriness :P but I'm assuming that you perhaps did that intentionally artgeeky because the fire would distort the atmosphere, and sometimes when a camera goes off the front is clear, yet the background is blurry...?

    Maybe I'm just biased :P

PS: Hey you just submitted this a few hours ago! Then perhaps I'm not that slow at getting around then :P

    Interesting concept. The angst ::sobs::
Hm...the stars in front of the moon are a bit strange though. Perhaps that's just because I took astro last semester. ^_^'

I just wanted to comment that your work is really nice. I like how you took so many different images and made them into one. (With a back story as well.) I usually am a browser of the anime wallpapers, but when I saw yours as the Featured Item, I was really drawn to see what it was. Great job. Keep up the good work! :)

The building and the sky are fitting great to the character. Only thing I don't like a lot is the burning tree.

The building structure seems to have become unfitting with the high quality bg and i still see unextrracted lines all over which could be well made to become more better, although you can backfire at this when you make the bg scruffy abstract looking but at least you got the lighting right. Keep it up man! :P

I absolutely SAVOR this wall! The valkyrie is beatiful and mixes with her background like chocolate and strawberries. excuse simile. I can tell real effort was put into this. :D

You do a really nice job picking your stocks to fit your theme and scan. I like the fire since it did a good job with the lighting of the scan. The moon looks really cool and the cathedral looks cool but the quality is a lil grainy in spots but it's very close. Other than that, this is really cool and well done. Good stuff~

Having the moon in the background, the church looks so real. Seeing the fire, makes me hot and feeling the heat upon my soul. Seeing the lovely onna, she looks soo pensive, it's almost like she's ready to take action, whatever the action maybe. Thanxs for the share ;-)
