I made this wallpaper with one purpose in mind: to get some practical use with
the gradient mesh tool. I've been using Illustrator since version 5 and never
found the courage to try it out, for although it is very powerful (really great
vector artists can acheive near photo-quality images with it) it is very complex
and hard to control.
In order to force myself to learn, I picked out a PlanetES image because it had
lots of soft color changes and gradients, and began experimenting.
Along the way I learned a lot that didn't work well and a few things that did.
And here is the result. As a crash course in mesh tool, it's not bad. All the
gradients in this trace are done using mesh, even in instances were a simple
linear/radial gradient would have sufficed.
The Earth image is from NASA's website. I was so not going to trace that. Google
Image Search for the win.
I know nothing about PlanetES; I chose the scan because it was on my hard drive,
and I thought the concept of the image as a reflection was interesting. To that
extent I did not add in the portion of Hachimaki's back, instead having the
image a pure reflection, so that it's almost like it's your reflection - you are
floating up to dock at a space station, or something like that (like I said, no
idea what PlanetES is about, although I wouldn't mind watching it if I ever had
time.)
As for the title, well, it's the name of a popular tv show. Why not.

Tama-Neko, the vector cat has introduced a revolutionnary new feature to her
already marvelous vectors: the notorious mesh tool. With it she was able to
bring and a professionnal touch to the wallpaper and something that is often
missing in vectors, depth. She meticulously payed attention to details and it
shows. this is truly a good example of how an already talented and experienced
waller can till learn new techniques and improve his or her work.
Taddaa..

this is seriously amazing tama, not only is the vectoring well done but that gradient work really adds a strong touch to this. it looks so sleek and professional i cant believe it. also, the fact you did a planetes wall deserves merit in itself, its such a welldone show that i find is way underappreciated...
very nicely done
now i wanna try illustrator @_@.....maybe after 5 years xD

now i wanna learn the gradient mesh tool (don't even know what it does xD)
it's awesome and super fantastically (is it even a word? O_o) done.
looks fabulous. *fav*
Whoa, very simple and interesting wall!
I have never seen PlanetES before, but for a vector, I would have to say extremely stunning. ^^ Shows what you can do once you have skill..
Realistic all in all. <3
Woah...terrific. I don't know what to say about it, I just love it. The solar panneling...thing...looks fantastic. Great job with the colors and the reflective look. The color variations in the suit and helmet look great and the reflection of the earth up in the right-hand corner looks great. Looking at the scan you took it from...wow. You did a very nice job making it not look like the scan.
Thanks for putting all that work into this and uploading it for us to enjoy. Truly a great wallpaper.
Awesome! I'm so glad someone showed some love toward the Planetes series! I've only read the manga, but it was one of my favorites. I think you did an excellent job. I love the angle of reflection. It's like a 3 part picture: space, the laptop, and the astronaught (spelling?). Great job. ^_~
That is simply amazing! The metal equipment with the hinge or what, looks especially good!
