Im definitely not a fan of Johnny To's past works. Ive seen several over the years and for the most part hated them. his works imo suffered from a terribly paced and edited narrative resulting in a confusing mess most times. though i disliked them, i always thought he had what it takes to make something really great if he could manage to get over his weaknesses. i especially liked how well he could create amazingly moody scenes with his unique combination between music and camerawork. I remember vividly scenes from two of his movies PTU (climax shootout) and Throwdown (chase scene) where i could care less what the movie was as i had not been enjoying it up to that part but these two scenes, were highly memorable in just the way they were brilliantly pieced together.
Because of this, when I initially heard about election last year, I had mixed opinions. First off, i couldnt wash off the bad mark his last movies left in my mouth, but at the same time I was thinking this could very well be what i was waiting for. As time went on, and more and more material was released on it the more interested i got. The first set of stills were utterly beautiful and the reviews froms it's festival run had nothing but praise for it.
So finally a year a later now, the HK DVD hit in late december though i didnt get around to buying it since i wasnt in the mood for blind buys. This left me with few options, either miss this one or do something i rarely do for films, dl it. haha well it turns out i chose to dl it and what did i think of it?
in one statement....this is the godfather of HK organized crime films....take that as what you may but pretty much, its one of the best gangster and possibly best triad movie i have seen in the last decade. I hadnt been this blown away by a HK film since John Woo's A Better Tomorrow and thats saying a f*ckload if you know where im coming from. Its a brilliantly crafted piece of how a triad really operates and is probably one of the more realistic movies out there for the genre.

anyways enough raving, since you can get that from any critic, about the actual wall.....

ok i need to get this out....i did not make this for distribution, it was solely for my own use. I hardly did anything "creative" with it and it was really just a re-cging and a little modifying here and there. The poster art was just to badass to passup and essentially, anything added to it would only make it look worse.

so now...ok the wall is essentially the kickass poster for this flick modified to fit a wall res. i cropped it to the correct size and then removed the title from where it originally occupied. In this space, i re-cged as best i could alot of the pic back. Then i put the title back in which i extracted and put it back in the same place but alot smaller as originally it went from side to side. The i took out the back bg which was a red texture and just made it black, and then a quick few smart blurs to get rid of some of the grain. The pic was already extremely high res as i extracted it from a pdf originally for press use. Finally i upped the saturation to create a more bold look.

Since i ddint do much in the creative department here, i dont want to take any credit for this, hence why i just said i formatted it to a wallsize in my sig.

Beats me how manage to make such great walls (well, I guess you just have some serious talent), but I mostly love your submissions for their dramatic expression and a tension that never fails to get the observer (aka me) to look deeper than you usually would when viewing a wall.

Here, I love the color scheme and the overall neatness that directs the eye directly to the point, without superfluous adornments or over-the-top dramatization.

All in all, a really nice piece. Thanks. *grin*

Whoa you really put the boldness of the wall into focus since it really shows the true nature of the crime family when they make mistakes hence they chop a finger off to redempt for their failures... but lovely use of colors and brings out the harmony in it for some reaosn... Great job!
