Ah, now for a second victim: I recently decided to start commenting on the "Today's Favorite" selections, and you are the unlucky second strike on my wall.

More eye candy. Boring. Trite. Unoriginal. Aesthetically unpleasing???

Okay, so the first few are normal for eye candy dt designs. I get that. I'm not here specifically to tear you down for it, though it is blatantly obvious here. But eye candy dt designs should at the very least actually be eye candy, and you failed to accomplish that, I'm afraid.

First of all, I fail to see how you managed to do to the original scan what you did: the original was far clearer and in sharper quality than the picture now residing in this design. For a wallpaper like this, you should attempt to improve on the scan's quality, not make it worse. If you want to make it lighter, remove some saturation, remove some contrast, that's perfectly fine. But don't make the scan more pixelated-looking than it was to begin with--not in this kind of design.

Second, the completely uninspired background is, quite simply, just boring. I can't think of what I'm going to put in my background, so I'm just going to fill it up with some random lights. I'm sorry, but no. Not special in the slightest.

The small castle thing in the bottom right hand corner is disproportionate to the rest of the design, and leaves a lot to be desired: I mean, come on. If you're going to go with random lights, at least stick with random lights, don't throw in random, tiny pieces of scenery along with them, it doesn't work.

There are a couple of areas where some straight lines blatantly reveal changes in the positioning of things after their creation. Don't take shortcuts, if you're going to change things, do it well. It may be tedious, but the results are worth it.

The motes of light are far too numerous. If you want to enhance a design with motes, enhance away, I'm not stopping you (even if they are, once again, trite and boring). Just try to actually enhance it instead of using these motes to cover up for the fact that you can't think of a background. The bubble-shaped motes? Better than some I saw just last week, but they can be improved. Look up some better tutorials if you can't think of how.

The feather looks good. Unfortunately, it makes no sense being in the place that it is. Where the hell is it coming from, and what the hell does it have to do with the rest of the design? Your elf has no wings.

Finally, the text is simply the worst. Papyrus, as I keep telling people, is by far the most overused font in existence. It is not an appropriate font for any photoshop design. It has no place in the world any more. It's done. Over. Kaput. Dead.

On a positive note? You have a good eye for placement and atmosphere creation. You obviously have some fair amount of skill in Photoshop. You just need to spend a longer period of time in the brainstorming phase before you go and do whatever it is you want to a design. Making quality designs relies as much on the time spent outside of doing the actual designing as it does on the time spent doing it.

I agree with RainOfStars: A bit too much on the bubbles but a great job, with beautiful magic effects...

  24. redangel6112 Oct 23, 2005

perfect. This is the type of wallpaper I had been searching for. I like the background you had made. The bubble and light effect makes Olha looks like The Goddess of Heaven plus the castle behind there. Great Job. ....Thanks For Sharing... ^_~
I'm going to add this into my favorites and put into my desktop as wallpaper. :)
