Yes, you are looking at my newest wall, that is at the same time my 2nd wallpaper in life :]

************************************************

Details about the wall:
Title: Meet Me In Heaven
Time to complete: 9 days (do not make me count hours >.< definitely too much)
Number of layers: 53
Original psd file: over 38mb
Tutorials read to complete it: dozens about each: water, planet, clouds

************************************************

Before I move on to the description of the walling process let me thank few members :D
First of all, I want to thank my great friend and great mod Keltosh for his support and objective criticism that allowed me and my skills to evolve and who pushed me to correct every mistake (even when I have been quite happy with the result ^^). It is thanks to him that I have learned not to push some things too much and value time, effort and patience :]

Next, I would like to thank two of my great friends here, whose continuous support, encouragement and help allowed me to finish this wall and not to leave it half-unfinished. They were with me through many times of my frustration and sadness. So basically without them this wall would not have come into being in this form (yes you know who is to blame:P). Anyway, thanks to Dufoe88 and Rikimaru-jp. They offered not only they words of encouragement but also took time to send me some useful brushes and so on :] So thank you from the bottom of my heart.

************************************************

Ok, now back to the wall.

First my intention: I wanted to make a background with a dancing girl in the heaven. I got a clear picture of what it should look like, but finding the proper scan that would fit my idea was not that easy. I have spent over 2 whole days digging through galleries at MiniTokyo, AnimePaper and some others. Searching. At the time, also Rikimaru-jp and Dufoe88 engaged in the search process and were sending scans they thought might suit my concept for the wall. None of the scans did. Until, I found (of course as a last one) this beautiful scan from Erementar Gerad at AnimePaper.

So, I had my scan. I extracted it. Now will be the laughing part :P Since I am a C-o-M-p-L-e-T-e n00b at walling, I did the extraction the longest possible way. I used the pen tool. Devoted over 2hrs to the sole extraction, and then Riki told me I could have used magic pen to extract it since that bg at the original scan was all white >.< He killed me there. Then I cleaned the extracted scan to improve its quality. And then I had to extract it 2 more times, because at one time my computer crashes (and I did not manage to save the file) and again cause there was a glitch in the extraction.

Ok. I had an extracted scan and my concept. I had to learn how to create water in photoshop (since I never did it before, quite understandable since it is only my 2nd attempt at walling). I have read every tutorial there is about creating water. Tried them all but the effect was not satisfactory. So I combined few tutorials to create it, among them: Shinta's water tutorial and Rippled Water Walkthrough tutorial that I have found at DeviantArt. The others I can't remember.
But I am really proud of this water (actually I am the proudest of water in this wallpaper)

Then I moved on to create clouds. I made like 10 versions in over all of them until I became satisfied with them. For the clouds I used various brushes downloaded from DevianArt and send to me by Dufoe88. I have also drawn from a scratch the cloud at the very front ^^

Then I moved on to create planet. I did it according to Greg Martin's famous tutorial. The result you can see :]

Ok then I added wings, stars, birds, magic, mist and finally all the reflections in the water (not necessarily in this order). It might sound easy for you but it was a hell and real torment for me. Now I present you with the final effect.

Please comment, fav if you like it. I will gladly hear words of constructive criticism as well :] Since I do not know what to write I will just end it like that ^^

Oh, if you want to see some steps in this wall making process, see this: Steps walkthrough

Oh, and please full-view to see all the details (esp. water)

What a beautiful wall! (and an essay for description!) :) Excellent job jasmine! I think there are definite leaps in improvement from your first wall here. (from my humble perspective as a non-waller ^^; mind you, I still do have a sharp eye XD)

First off, the extraction's result, of course, is beautiful (as is the scan of choice). What I like more about it is that it doesn't 'stick out' from the background. (I mean, it definitely stands out because of its colors, but it doesn't look like it doesn't belong.) I've never walled before so I don't know, but often in wallpapers I find that the extraction is pretty nicely done but just don't blend/work with the rest of the wall.. As if there's a thin layer of air between the scan and the background. I'm not sure wheter that's something unavoidable or fixable but regardless, I don't see that awkwardness here. (still trying to figure out how that works..) Hm. I'm thinking perhaps its also thanks to your very very soft, etheral, placid setting that doesn't draw too much attention to itself and lets the girl take center stage...?

Anyway this brings us to the background & composition~ :)
i love it~ It's so beautifully done, yet it doesn't scream out for attention. We can see all the minute details that you took the pains to place if we look closely, but otherwise it provides a soft unearthly setting in which she is so exquisitely floating.
Since you're proud of your water, I'll start with that. ^^ I like how the water is misty - I think it significantly helps the rendering of the 'heavenly' aspect. There are subtle ripples that captures the moment the girl is above the water, and an otherwise fascinating, mercury-like placidity. Very nice.
I also like the clouds and the stream of white bird silhouettes moving from right to left. They quietly add a sense of direction; they don't follow her line of sight (which is more left to right) but her posture (right to left), which I think was a good intuitive choice on your part. The white birds going from left to right would have been going against the 'direction' or sense of movement that the focus (the girl) is showing, which would have caused something of a directional dissonance and awkwardness. The way it is now, is almost like they're emanating/spreading out from her (yes I did notice the few on her right - they go from left to right :)).
I also like the tiny butterfly-shaped sparkles that encircle her. What should I say... it's so kawaiii! ^^ No but really. I really like the fact that it's not overdone. Many people go excessively overboard with these things (when there are LOTS of pretty effects but there's absolutely no point/extra thought to them other than that they give us eye-candy.. although I guess that's some proof of walling skills, I'd prefer something more). Here I'm not blown away with dazzling eye-popping sparkly flashy effects, but more like.. invited to look closer.. if that makes any sense. ^^ And I don't know what those unidentifiable pretty translucent lines/polygonal shapes are, but same goes for them. Subtle, but calculated in its use. Nice nice nice.
Oh yes, and the huge moon/planet inevitably boosts the character's presence and its colors softly complement hers. I like the lighter toned pink on the left edges of the moon (to her left) and the slightly darker blues/purples towards the right. It reinforces her 'direction' that I wrote about up a few lines.

Now that I've praised your wall for a while, I'll move to point out a few things that caught my attention...
... well, there's not much really. ^^; I think the water tone can see its blues turned down a tiny notch. I saw the steps, and I know its been softened quite a bit, but I think it can afford to be softened a bit more, which I think would work well with the 'heaven' concept, and also become a bit more pastel-toned and work with the rest of the background. Hm.. or maybe just the back areas.. Not sure..
You've done a great job with showing which clouds are closer to the fore, and I think that same principle can be used on the water. The ripples toward the back are as clear as those in the front, which reduces the scale of the water setting by making all parts of the water 'close' to the viewer. Actually I don't know what you intended to create so I'll just say this: the water is beautiful, but it doesn't seem like there's an abundant amount - the girl almost looks as if she's above a small pool/pond of water. I don't know if you were going for an 'ocean' but in the event that you were, I think more detail in the fore and less in the back could help.
The other thing I wanted to point out was the wings. I absolutely love the wings you've put on her. Call me nuts for being so picky, but I think their placement may be a little off. Namely, that extra-looking one next to the middle wing.. If I turn the character around in my head to look at her back, I think that one would look almost reversed (as in, the rest would be spreading out from her back but that one will be closing in). I'm going to speculate here, but maybe you put that wing there so that there will be 6 of them in total and maintain a sense of symmetry..? I think the wing could've peekd out from her left or not shown at all. This may sound crazy but it might help to make crude models of these if you want to be more accurate - I used to do them when I was young. ^^; So like fold/cut out a piece of paper in the shape of a wing and try placing it on the back of something like.. a small bottle or a wine glass (so you can see through it). And oh my goodness. I didn't intend for this comment to turn out this long xp

i think I'll stop now ^^; Great job jasmine! The drastic improvements you made are exciting :) I'm looking forward to seeing more from you!

p.s. I almost forgot how much I appreciate the text. It's so perfectly sitting atop the horizontal mist-like things above the water that even the text almost seems as if it's hovering above the surface. The soft white against the shadows of the clouds was also very well placed.
    p.p.s. oohh I just tried this on my desktop and it looks nice. I'm faving this! bahaha! ^^;

It's cool, I love the background, it lets her look very soft and sweet. Good job. ^_^

So lovely work >_< I do love it, thanx so much for sharing it >_<

  13. Mrchak Oct 16, 2005

OK Anything what i say right now will seem so small and ungreatful to the time and effort that you put in this wall to make it... Words like "i like it" and "cool" are stupid and look so small to the words that this wallpaper really deserves... I know that i would run out of patience in the middle of this wall so i admire you very much! Your wall and your hard work is so inspiering that i think most of the ppl on mt should look up to you and i know i will...

Now for the wall... The water is awsome and also the coluds and the planet is very well made and gives the cool and mystic atmosphere to the wall. Kel-kun said that this isnt a perfect wallpaper, well i think differently because this wall is looking good on a desktop and it serves its purpose like a real wallpaper. I'm saying this coz the walls that come in the favs for today section 90% of them arent good on desktop and i wouldnt vote for them as the best ones but this wall is perfectly fitting. The colors are well combined and the whole thing looks very impressive. My oppinion is that your effort and work has payed off in my eyes and your such an inspiration to me now ^^ I honestly thank you for this.

  17. RainOfStars Oct 17, 2005

^^ Well, nicely done for your second wall.
The extraction is very clean and neat.
Great job on the water. It looks great.
The lines that swirling up around the scan could be more clear though. you can barely see them.
Lastly, what knd of wing are you trying to draw? An angel have only 1 pair. so that is not it. It looks like butterfly wings, but they only have 2 pair. The only thing I can think of that has 3 pair of wings is a seraphim, but that just don't look like it.

Congratulations on your second wall. Good job.

  18. Leaf Oct 17, 2005

I like the fact your improving on your skills, the planet, atmosphere and the reflection of the water is beautifully done with the text itself. Except the lil fact that the horizon seems a bit empty for some reason but nonetheless good job! :P

  21. djcrack Oct 17, 2005

Cool wall jasmine, love the bg and the scan they both just suit so well together...
