You are a strange bird
You sang so sweet then you flew away
You are a weird flame
You made me warm till I got burnt

Strange Bird - Anita Lipnicka & John Porter

************************************

Yes, you are looking at my first wallpaper in life XD Please comment. I will gladly hear constructive criticism and tips on what and how to improve. Also please bear with the possible major mistakes, but I am still learning how to work in Photoshop and how to create walls.

Before I start talking about the wall itself, let me thank Keltosh for his enormous help on this wall (I have been bugging and pestering him with stupid noob questions on "how/what do i do/what does it mean" and frequently asking for step-by-step explanations). So thanks again Keltosh :]

I also thank Rikimaru-jp and Dufoe and Papy for their help and words of encouragment. :D Guys you are wonderful ^^

Now back to the wall. While starting I had some concept in mind of what I want to create... well it did not turn out, as I lack skills. So this wall, lacks in originality, is simple, with stars and wings and so on... basic really. But I put my best in it.

The scan choice was really easy, I did not want to make a wall with an ecchi scan, there are already too many of them. I wanted to use artwork by an artist whose work I really value and respect. Thus I choose Chen Shu Fen's scan that I found at Anime Paper. That scan was a hell to extract, esp. hair. I want you to know that it is also my first scan ever to extract. At first I did it using Shinta's tutorial with the polygonal lasso as a tool for the job. It did not look well, thus Keltosh taught me (once again thanks) using pen tool ^^ (As you see I am really a complete noob at it) and I later improved its quality following Shinta's tut. Then I created starry background following Greg Martin's tutorial. Then I searched through Deviant and found really good brushes - Galaxies by Sunira with which I created the nebula. What followed was my playing with stars and swirl brushes and later creating wings (also done accoring to Shinta's tutorial). Added sig and the title. And voila. My first wall ever is done XP.

Time: around 32 hours
Layers: 24
Program: Photoshop CS2

So comments and criticism welcomed :]

EDIT
As usual, I knew what I wanted to say but could not just phrase it properly. I first created that nebula background. As you all can see, the colors are very bright and intensive (is that a proper word???:/). Thus the sole scan looked pretty plain on the bg. I thought about the way to balance the color contrast between the scan and the bg, thus I thought about making the wings. They did they work. But it was not enough to balance it all. The whole wall just lacked smth. Thus I played with the swirl brushes and imho without them the whole bg looks unfinished.

EDIT2
About the scan extraction - actually I made in 3 times ;P First using the polygonal lasso, second (after Keltosh's tips) with pen tool (but as a complete noob I made a mistake and merged the layers - time to laugh - so I had to start over again). lol XD

Wow, very gothic, with all that draws at both sides! XD
I like this wallpepar, really a good job. ^^

  2. Mrchak Sep 28, 2005

Jazz-chan i love it!!! For the time you invested in this wall i think its payed off. I especially like the black thingy frame around the image. I like the stars and the star mist on the wall you did a great job there. :D And i think you were right about the ecchi theme there really is TOO MUCH of those so i think this is beautyful! *adding it to favs* So i hope to see more of those in the near future. I'm sure you'll be much better Photoshop artist and make the most beautyful walls. :)

Wow! Jasmine, you sure like make an impact with your first wall! Love your choice of scan, and the way that you've created her wings is so fitting; gentle & soft just like the girl :)

I'm starting to learn walling too ~ yours is so superior to mine so far (but I wont post anything until I'm satisfied it's above "mediocre" which is what a lot of them seem to be lately). But that's amazing, that it's so hard to believe it's your first wall!!!!

  4. Aa-chan Sep 28, 2005

It's come out well for your first wall. The background is nice and the wings work really well. I'm not really liking the framed effect, but that could just be me :) .

  5. white-zero Sep 28, 2005

    Gosh. THE first wall? O___O

    Right. Contsructive comment.

I like the BG you made but the scan could do more touching up in terms of brightness/contrast and a little more fixing on the extraction part. Also, the wall looks better without the text in my view.

Overall, a superb job for a first one. Keep up the momentum. :)

  6. SilentMasamune Sep 28, 2005

Let me see...the background is really nice. However, I don't think that the spatial dimensions of the wings agree too much with the spatial dimensions of the scan. I also think that because of all the lighting in the background that you could add an inner glow to the scan. Text is tricky, really tricky...have you ever heard of the Scriptina font? That may work real nicely instead with the right effects done to it. Overall, the wall looks neat for your first, and I hope to see more soon.

  7. chibikko Sep 28, 2005

wow very good first wallpaper, you've put a lot of effort in this wallpaper. you extracted it twice, that's really praiseworth hehe. the background is good choice with the colors and matches the scan. maybe she's a little bit too light compared to the background. so you could either make the background lighter or darken the scan, which might be more difficult. 'm not too fond of the brushes but that's really just a matter of taste, since i never liked them. but nevertheless, one of the best first wallpapers i've seen. i hope you'll continue the work and improve more and more. good job, jasmine!

  8. Nayako Sep 28, 2005

Really nice work as for the first wallie ^__^ Its a good start!! XD
Hope to see more soon ;) I'm sure you will learn how to use Photoshop very quickly...
I remember my first "meeting" with this program...black magic...it's all I can to say....
    Good job!! Keep'em up!! XD

  9. mihopl Sep 28, 2005

Jasmine..... I'm soo proud of you............ my little apprentice! XD Dark side of the Force rulz!!!! hehehehe Good work my friend. Keep'em up. :D

  10. RainOfStars Sep 28, 2005

Well, good job on the wall. It is very good for your first one. But there are also a few spots that need a be of touch up. From the looks of it, the scan is very very jard to extract (white with light blue background x_x ). I grenerally avoid that with a dark background, since no matter what you do to it, there will always be a problem, and the background will just intensify the mistake. Nevertheless, you did a great job on the background. The wings look a bit weird. I can't get on my finger what is wrong with it. I think it might be the perspective of it. ^_^' I can't do a proper wing myself, so don't know how to fix it. Lastly, the text is a bit hard to read. Generally, I have to download 5 or 6 fonts and try about 8 fonts to get the exact one I want. the text is also a bit plain. You could put so effect on it.
Other than that, *clap* congratulation on your first wall. Keep working and I am sure that you will be great at this^^

  11. Nyuu-chan Sep 28, 2005

Very nice wallie and this is your first time .. Great! Keep up good work Jasmine ^^

  12. Rikimaru-jp Sep 28, 2005

So you finally made it Jaz ;) I was almost with you most of the time while you were making it and I've seen the basic steps that you took to make it and I must admit to you that I was really surprised when I saw the background because it looks wonderful and not for a first wallie even if this were your 10th wallie I would have said the same thing cause I am really impressed of your work here :)
So lets begin with the background, it looks really charming and that's because you used lots of details and the stars are wisely displayed ;) not to mention that the stars dust look amazing! But there's something bothering me with the background and that's the pink dots they really don't suit the wallie at all I recommend you to remove them because they are not necessarily!!
The wings….. they fit with the girl so much that I would fell for it and think they are originally connected to her back if I haven't seen the extracted girl before XP really you made a great job on the wings! I like how you made them shine nice touch ;)
The swirls look good and it's a nice idea because they represent the frame for this wallie and suits it a lot :)
The extraction…. Well I've seen that you improved it, but it needs some work on the head (hair), if you ask me I think you should try to add outer glow to the character and see how it might end up!
Last but not least the text lol you always criticized my texts XP the font for "Strange Bird" suits a lot with the swirls but not with the background I think you should change its color and try to improve it too with the blending options maybe adding some glow or texture to it might look much much better! Because the text looks kinda shy XP and I can barely see it!! That goes also to the signature texts you need to change their colors and maybe enlarge them a little bit!
I really hope my advices will make a good difference to the wallie :)
Jaz I am really proud of you because you made a great work and it's still your first try wish my first wallie were this good XP you have lots of talent and a big heart I wanna thank you for mentioning me there :) I'm glad!!!
It certainly deserves a fav :) keep it up Jaz I really can't wait to see your next wallie ;)

  13. Lilim Sep 28, 2005

Ah so you finally made it Jasmine :) I see that Rikimaru-jp sad everything that I wanted to say XP
Overall effect is really impressive. Although you should work on this black swirls. Maybe blend them a little ^^
As for the extraction I too think that you should do something about the hair.
Wings. Ah they look beautiful ^^

I can't wait to see your next wallpapers in future XD

  14. Nona Sep 28, 2005

woooow, not bed for a first wallpaper! :) I like the wings, and in the bg the nebula effects. Yo will learn using ps step by step, yust continue to make walls!

  15. Karolina Sep 28, 2005

Ahhh Wow Jasmine! U did it! XD Ahh I still can't figure it out with photosop >.<
And well Cuz I don't know how to make wallies I think that u did a woderfull job on this and the scan is very beautiful!
I like very much how u did this whole wall and ur idea is great :)
i hope to see more and much much better walls from u XD

    I had to dash over after seeing your submission notification :) I must say, it's very good considering it's your first wall. In celebration of your first submitted wall, I think I'll take my time and write you a long comment. :D So here's what I think. And this is from a viewer's perspective, since I've never really walled before and am unable to give you technical tips. ^^;

i really like your scan choice - she's so beautiful. Indeed, there are way too many ecchi stuff on MT.. and I love that type of softness in artworks. From what I can see in the original scan, it seems like extracting may have been pretty tricky since there aren't any hard edges that you can just trace. So I guess the greyish outline on her shoulders and hair couldn't be helped? (The grey against the skin tone and the white wings was something that jumped out at me on my first glance.)

The color sceheme you chose as the background seems fitting and appropriate to the scan. Even though I guess her expression and body language is a bit cold, she's illustrated in such a smooth/soft way that using too cool a color scheme may have detracted from the overall effect.

i think one thing that you can easily change when creating future walls is learning to make more use of randomness. For example, the stars with 5 legs and a circle in its center (and the 4-legged ones too) are very 'human' in placement, size, and appearance, if you know what I mean.. Acknowledging the fact that there isvaried brightness, we can also see that they are pretty much the same size and are placed at regular intervals, almost as if they were stage spotlights from far away. I'm not sure if that was your intention, but seeing as you've otherwise done a nice job of creating space, I thought I should point that out. Another thing that's sort of gnawing at me (so I have to say it) is that the space on the left and right side of her head differs quite a bit. The sort of.. grungy..? texture on the right doesn't continue in the other parts of space in the wall which I thought was a bit odd. I think it might contribute to a sense of discontinuity in the background.

I like the text! The font and the words work very well each other I think. It doesn't stand out too much, and sort of peeks out at you from the other side of her line of vision. Very cute. And for some reason I'm appreciating the swirly frame - I usually don't like frames. I dunno something about it gives a sense of stability and closure to what could've been an otherwise rather 'open' and empty wall. At the same time the swirls keep the wall more animated, I think. You were smart to make the swirled frame asymmetrical - a symmetric frame really could've ruined the wall I think. Thanks to the frames, the composition also becomes more interesting. ^^ And, I kinda like the wings. :) It appears to be more of an aura/tone than actual wings, which I'm having a hard time imagining on her.

You have lots of good elements in the wall. I think the challenge is figuring out how to combine them all so that it becomes comprehensive and interdependent on each other.

Okay I'll stop there. I talked way too much. ^^ Good job, and keep them walls coming~!

Oh cool, jasmine-chan made a wallie! This is really good for a first effort! Great job on the background, it looks really good! Nice job with the wings too. :) Great work Jasmine, keep it up! I hope to see more walls from you. :)

Nice! I like the background and the colors you used. Very nice! My only problem would be the extraction, mostly around the hair. Other than that though, great job! (it's a hella lot better than my first wall >.<)
