Hellsing: The Iron Maiden
BACKCHAT 31/05/07: For a long while now since my return to MT, I thought it would be an interesting endeavour to look again through the very first submissions within our gallery and review them in a modern and perhaps maturer light. Let's talk about this piece here for a minute:
You know how it is when you design a work and a few years down the line you look back at it and think to yourself: 'Gawblimey, what the hell was I thinking?' I'd say that's the
felling I get now as I look at this piece. Dynamic and elegant? More like over-baring and..well, overbearing. In colour
that is. The Hellsing series either manga or anime is such that it boxes its self in with a single colour. Red.
Unfortunately digital artists composing wall pieces for the series tend to follow suit and even I came under the spell
of rich reds. There's only so much that is needed however to prove a point. It's a difficult piece. I feel to
this day the composition is fine, but it's the colour scheme and large scale blood effects that could most likely
be left to hang. I'm pleased to have been the one to break the mould for the red theme within the Hellsing gallery
during my release of White Hunger. That's a piece I consider a crowning
work. Regardless, this is Integra Hellsing. And as experimental as she was at the time, it's still a piece that
stood the test of time and displayed a certain mood during its creation. We'll leave it at that.
