Last Life In The Universe - directed by Pen ek
Ratanaruang
I myself have to admit that I am not familiar at all with Thai films, yet the ones i have seen I liked a great deal. "Last Life In The Universe" is probably my favorite i have seen so far from this country and definitely one of the more polished works I have seen in a while. This movie was brought to my attention years back not because of the director, but of the lead actor and cinematographer. The director, Pen ek Ratanaruang caims that the whole idea of the movie was to work with the lead Tadanobu Asano and famous Wong Kar Wai collaborator/cinematographer Christopher Doyle. Also, Takashi Miike who makes a cameo in the movie was also part of this as well. From what I heard, all four of them had known each other from the film festival circuits and had always talked about doinga movie together. Foreign investors gave Pen ek a chance to take a risk with a movie so decided it was a good time to do follow through with this idea of theirs. The movie itself is very hard to talk about without revealing too much while at the same time is just plain hard to put into words. The movie is definitely on the abstract side of things but not so far as something like Godard or some other french new wave. Simply put, the movie is a very obscure love story with a struggle to find a reason to live. It centers around a japanese man (Asano) who is obsessed with suicide and two sisters whom he find an attraction for. The visuals of the movie are its definite strongpoint which is of course not surprising at all when you have Chris Doyle behind the shots.
The Poster
For the poster, i wanted to use the image that was used on many of the original posters for the movie because I always thought it was a very beautiful shot. Though to make it my own design, I made it alot more minimalistic by darkening in the background to only leave the part of the image i wanted. Then, I really wanted to show both sisters in the poster yet didnt know how to do this at first since ther image didnt really allow for editing easily and for the most part, promotional pictures of her dont exist. What I ended up doing was taking a screencap of the same scene that was used for the pic and editing it to have the sister and match the original image i was using. The I simply reversed it creating a very symmetrical image.
