My second entry for NewWaveProject's Design-a-Movie-Poster contest.
At first I wanted to make a poster for Murderball but realized I probably wouldn't be able to find any good hi-res images to base ideas off of. Then Jurijuri mentioned briefly in her livejournal that Sony Pictures was going to release Memoirs of a Geisha, based on the Arthur Golden novel of the same name, later this year. Since I like the book, and hope the movie adaptation is good, I decided to make a poster for it.
I found a wonderful stock photograph of two geisha from StockExchange (where else?) and really liked the way she was facing away from the camera, her face hidden to us. In a way it is like how Golden describes his book - many Westerners don't know a lot about geisha, and thus half of their exoticness arises from their mystery. A geisha whose face cannot be seen makes me think of this mystery, how we cannot see who she really is, until we get a glimpse of what her life might be like in the novel (or movie.)
I went for an extremely stylized image -- yes, it's inspired by Phantom of the Opera posters. I felt that the usage of just three sparse colors, white for her skin, red for her inner kimono and hair barrette, and black for her outer kimono and hair, would make it a clean, sharp image. I also experimented with numerous Illustrator brushes until I found one that would give the idea of sumi-e painted strokes. The decision to keep the background black was a hard one -- at first I was going to do that, then I wanted to make it feel like an ukiyo-e painting and was going to put it on a canvas texture, but that texture diluted the starkness of the image, so I went back with the black.
Text is simple, clean, and elegant - one of my favorite serif fonts, VenetianBT. The highlight of "geisha" in red corresponds to the highlighting of the word "geisha" in the Japanese text, a direct translation of the title, "Geisha no Kaikoroku" and is used as a linking element between the two pieces of text.
I placed my Chinese seal in the corner, just for kicks.
NOTE: Red compresses terribly in jpegs. I hate that. But the color selection stays. Red is a color of allure, and this IS a geisha, after all. Full view -- it's much smoother in the full-sized version.

Note: Wallpaper resolutions are available.

So stylistic and simple, but very striking! I really like how stylized this is, without looking like design for design's sake alone. The concept and execution work very well. ^_^ Great job!

And now you've made me want to make a PotO poster...XD

Great job as expected of Tama-san. Typography fits very well with the poster. I especially love how you that 'classic-paintbrush-stroke'/sumi-e painted strokes. The black bg really gives out the impression of secretcy. I've heard that they were gonna get chinese actors to do the show but that's just a rumour I heard a while back. I've also read the book about a year back when I borrowed it from the local library. Great book indeed.

the style u draw the geisha, really looks like brush work...
i can feel a bit of Japanese art from the look of the geisha.
and it's great choice of showing her back to us..really did add a sense of mystery...hehe
Memoir of a Geisha is definitely a great book...i read it when i was in grade 11/12?

Beautiful work, this is pretty snazzy. I love this book, and you did an awesome job on this piece. I really hope you win the contest, yours is the coolest one I've seen so far. I especially love how she's facing away, and that the nape of her neck is one of the main focal points.
I'm adding this to my favorites.

    wo-
wow. I never knew this existed. Memoirs of a Geisha is probably in my top 10 best novels I ever read ( I read quite a lot), and the upcomming movie has to be THE one I can't wait to see. So wow, ;_; something beautifully related. Great vector work, I love the effects. Can't even describe them..
Indeed this pose is very traditionnal to the Geisha as the neck is one of the most erotic body parts for the japanese, and that's why you probably know Geishas have the back of their kimonos decollete. There's also the mystery factor that you stated about how they must wear a "mask" all their lives in public, and we can never really know what their true identities are...
And so on.. I could babble about Geishas for hours and paragraphs.
    Anyways, great graphics
