UA2 - Looking to the Light

Artist Comment

I don't know what to say... Umm... well, this is my entry for the Underappreciated Contest 2, The theme is "Appropriation" and the Wallpaper is to reflect the phrase "There is no Darkness where there is Light". I know it needs some work right now but I'm not sure what to do at the moment, so I'm posting now to see if I can get some feedback. I rather like it simple like it is but I keep thinking that it's too simple... The Background image is a stock photo I found that I gave the "underpainting" filter to. My Vector is done, as always in my Brush style. I added a Lens effect that makes the image look a little more like the original scan too XD

Original scan can be found here in Valary's Gallery. I plan on posting my vector for this scan AFTER ther contest to prevent other contestants from attempting to swipe it >_> It could happen.

I decided to use this image because LastDinosaur used the Air image (The only series I'd seen) But I'm vaguely familiar with Tenjou Tenge, though I've never seen it, and I liked this picture. After Vectoring it I LOVE this picture XD

Wallpaper Stats:
Layers: 5
Time Spent: 3 hours (mainly experimentation and deliberation XD)

Vector Stats: http://download.minitokyo.net/thumbs/140052.jpg
Layers: 66
Time Spent: 12 hours (With some breaks)

Butterfly Vector:

Time spent: 1 hour

Any feedback would be appreciated...

Okay, I went back and did those little things you guys suggested. I took out the color from the outline, I vectored a butterfly (It's a different butterfly, because I felt like it.) I also added a bit of lens flare to the BG and attempted to soften the AutumnVines brushing I have in the foreground. But if you don't like the revamo here's a link to the original still :P XD

Edit: I encountered a butterfly that I liked better (I wanted one that looked like it was flying away from them and not just "there") so I vectored it, added some nice features to it and added it to the wallpaper ^_^ And I tried without the BG outlines and it seems so much cleaner and brighter without them (it was hard to let go since it was part of my original concept...) but the butterfly became very precedent and I think the clean BG gives a purer feeling than I was going for originally (Originally I wanted a kinda all-encompassing view of everything so they were looking both ways in a sense, but I think the clean BG offers a feeling of how vast your horizons are and that possibilities are limitless and even if you can't catch the butterfly there are still many options out there... So essentially, it's deep XD). So I've decided on it as a final, but am still offering the lineart BG version ^_^

Hey Terra-chan the bright colours are really eyecathing in your vector. But the colour of the little girls hair outline look a little strange, but the gradient is a interesting idea. Also in the shadow or mirror the coloured outlines look a little out of place. The vector could also probably be moved down a bit to the bottom on the wall to cover the grass effect. Other then that its a really great (and interesting) wall. Nice entry!

Hmmm... I didn't think anyone would be bothered vectoring such a scan :D
Concept is good... very different to what I would have done (and yes, I am using this scan as well XP But dw I won't copy anything cuz I've already started :D)
The butterfly I think should be vectored, because it doesn't fit in too well, and I can recognise the single brush you used in the bottom right hand corner. It stands out a little too much, but overall, good concept :)

Quote by Terra-chanThank you for adding my Tenjo Tenge Wall "ua2 - Looking to the Light" to your favorites! ^_^

no, thank you for the time and effort you put into making this gorgeous wallie. and i disagree with tishdon's comments. i like the layout and i don't think that the colored outlines look "a little out of place." i also like the background, it looks so serene. ;)

I think it looks really nice. The girls hair is a little odd, I don't really know how to say it. There is just something...
Either way, I think you did a good job, and it is a nice wallie. ^^

Sugoi, sugoi very amazing wallpaper so kawaii
Yea you've made really great work just fantastic :)

  7. LastDinosaur Jun 27, 2005

oh my, you vectored the whole thing, you did an amazing job i might add. The wall looks great, the textured background was a good idea. The faded outlined versions of the charecters is an interesting concept, the wall would certainly be more empty without it, i think it would look fine either way tho. Anyways, good job on this wall.

I thought the scan was already good enough to wall, but it's good practice. You're really getting good at vectoring. This is a nice setup and I don't think it look too empty. But I don't think you need the outline of them on the left. It hides the nice scenery. But if you think it looks empty, you can add lighting, birds, or some clouds. Other than that, it's pretty sweet~

aahhh .. another vector fwom you XD and your special style which nobody else would succeed in doing so ^_^'

hmm .. the composition ish not bad :) though i'd suggest that you move the vector to the left a lil and make the butterfly smaller a bit. cause fwom the gurl's posture, it seems that she's looking at something (which i think ish your butterfly) far away.

the bg matches with the scan. though the grass part ish a lil realistic (just a minor problem). the bg misty effect makes the scene nice.

however, similar with lastdino's i kinda don't feel it too relevant to the theme. it doesn't give me any sense of darkness. but it's just pure happiness and serenity to me. maybe it's just the way i think.

but overall .. good job with the wallie :) it's nicely done.

Good move removing the outline~ I'd actually suggest removing the pattern too because the vector/butterfly/background is strong enough to stand by itself without it, but yah... commenting about this wall in the Underappreciated group userpage, definitely check it out after I finish writing it up... *^.~*
