Wow I haven't submitted anything for around a month... >_> Well, exams are pretty much over so I finished this wall which I started a month back...

Right anyway, for this one the background was done completely from scratch, the bridge included. Yes, believe it or not, I drew every last evil pixel of the bg. I would say that this one involved more time, effort and angst than my Home Sweet Home wall.

As for layers, I can't even be bothered to count them all, especially since I made most of it in separate files and then shoved them together to minimise lag. But if I was to guess, I'd say its somewhere between 200 and 300 layers. Considering the buildings took about 200 layers.

I know my extraction skills stink, plus the orignal scan wasn't very high quality, and on top of that I had to enlarge it a bit to fit the size I wanted. Really sorry about that.
Scan from minitokyo scan gallery, submitted by Miroku4444.

The building was drawn based on a photo I found on the net, it was the most irritating and frustrating thing I've ever drawn on Photoshop. And still it turned out to be the worst part of the wall T_T Everything's really wonky and it doesn't seem to fit in that well. If you really want to know, I pretty much drew the whole thing with chunks of strategically shaped colours. And I used a brick texture for the walls. And yes, those weird things sticking out of the water are... well weird but meh, it was on the photo and it'd look empty if I took them out. I have no idea what they are.

The bridge was actually quite fun, the bricks and sandstone texture were made with filters.
Meh, and I really suck at drawing clouds >_<

Right, I thought that I should dedicate this wall to the people who are currently kind of away from MT due to various reasons, such as Semanga, Samanosuke, Crewcifix, Melmachine and Flowerdog. I haven't really talked to many of them properly but it suits the theme and I'm sure many people here are waiting for them to return.

Enough babbling from me. And like I always say, comments are really welcome, both good and bad. Although I have a feeling that there's going to be a lot of crits this time... >_>

  4. exentric Jun 11, 2005

haha a really interesting wallpaper indeed~
kinda sad to see the scan is a bit low quality.
for the building, some of the windows are still weird perspective-wise. and the farther shud be a lil darker or brighter to give a sense of space. a sense that it's further away.
the light pole is pretty nice. just the curl part.I just cant figure how it is slanted.
the bridge has one big flaw. the texture is flawles, but the lines is plain illogical. the back is straight but the front one is to the right. I could be wrong, but to me it just looks wrong.
in any case, its a really interesting concept. just need some more work and it'll be perfect~ ^_^

wow, awesome background and great effort, though the extraction need to fix, coz i seen a few jagged line on her hair, but the background is impressive!

  7. zephiris26 Jun 11, 2005

Wow, now this is nice. Your background is very smooth, and it's very good considering you made it from scratch. The setting and sparkles on the water are really nice as well. The only minor gripe I have is that the scan of Nemu is a little bit blurry, but other than that, it's perfect. ;)
I'm adding this to my favorites.
Nice work, keep it up. :)

  8. Sugasuga Jun 11, 2005

kara, your skills are amazing o.o; another bg made from scratch and its a veri good one too ^^ the bg is juss awesum, the only thing i'll complain about is the water, its a bit odd and of course the scan quality isn't the best. but great work as usual, kara :D

Waaiiii~ that's a really awesome background for making it out of scratch. o.o;; There's a couple of flaws, but nothing's perfect, neh? ^^;; Mou, the scan is like whoa~ >w<;; The quality doesn't really fit in with the rest. <__<;; But I'm still going to favorite this wallpaper, and you can't stop me! x3 :: Cackles, steals favorite button and runs away. ::

  12. xtigy Jun 11, 2005

Very pretty wallpaper! The girl really blends in with the background you put her with. Good JOb ! :D

  13. rocknroll-isgo Jun 11, 2005

Wow, I am honestly very impressed by the background. The buildings/bridge are just... wow. The only things I have to critique are the low quality scan (but you already know about that one...) and the text. I'm not too fond about the fonts and the edges are a bit pixel-y. Also, the stars just don't really... fit.

Other than that, a fantastic wall Kara. Great job! :D

  14. EvoIIICE9A Jun 11, 2005

omg that is amazing you recreated that background O_o I admire your dedication I would have went ahhhhhhhhhhh f@#& this after a while hehehe. Besides the quality of the scan which you noted and those wierd water sticks its an amazing wall. Well done

Gold sunsets are always nice and have that romantic mood to them that when used properly can make a good wall into a great wall ... and you certainly have made a great wall. You designed the buildings quite well, and it's nice to see that you put effort in them because of all of the little details. Good use of texturing too. I know how is feels to spend forever on a wall doing brushwork and CGing XD ... but the end result is always far more superior when you spend the time to put in details.

The sparkles on the water are a good touch, but I wonder where the light source (the sun) is. It kind of seems a bit odd ... perhaps it;s behind the girl ... well whatever works ^_^' . Oh good shading and lighting too ... all of the shadowing matches quite well ... I still have problems with that sometimes  .

Anyway, the poles sticking out of the water look fine. I believe that they are used as a docking of sorts ... you anchor or tie the boat to the pole and then step off into the building ... well I've seen images of people in Venice do that anyway. The text design is good, but the three large stars look a bit off ... it's not quite night yet so I wonder about this x_x .

You have already addressed the issue with the girl and clarity, so I can't poke you about that :p . Also, your street lamp is done well with the shadine and it actually looks like light is coming out from it's bulb. It's at a bit of an angle though (the decorative swirls), when the light pole appears to be more of a frontal shot ... unless that is what you intended. Well in any case, I like to stare at your wall :nya: ... good stuff ... :nya: .
