This is my entry for round #3 of the NewWaveProject's Battle Royale I
theme is vector. opponent is waller "X"... and this is not a scenery wall.. :)
I have to explain myself. I wanted to create a vision that is very clean, almost sterile imagery.. combining strong perspective with total flatness I thought it will pull the viewer away from the "scenery" feel, which I am not pursuing in any way.. I mean just look at the ground. Does that makes sense.. let me try differently... story:
Her father is dead.. killed by cold-blooded murderers in front of her eyes. Her sorrow is as stronger as her anger. She has to grow up at the age of fifteen. Take life defining decisions. Revenge screams in her head day and night. Finally she is determined.. to leave home and avenge her father's death..

Well I tried to catch her in the moment of taking that decision, in the moment that is the end of honor /which is the subtitle for the game/, the moment she consciously loses her innocence... and she is off to kill...
Reaching back for a last touch of feeling home - /very straight forward represent by the buildings in the bg/
Just a glimpse of what's to come - /the handle of the sword/
The innocence lost forever - /the flowers fading behind her back/
The feel of freedom when you are so determined, so certain in your choice - /the birds flying in the sky/

I know it sounds very much "out there" maybe I am that kind of person...
but since it's the contest I really wanted to surprise... please enjoy it more as symbolic wallpaper other than scenic.

thanks a lot to saki, art, RaXiv, chris... and everyone that had a glimpse of it before submitting...

Enjoy and reflect...

EDIT: Full view to make most out of it... thumbnail sux.
markjo: I really don't know what the flowers are attached to.. check out the original scan.
rough outlines? where? on the thumbnail yes!

  2. Aa-chan May 14, 2005

The image is nice and sterile. I like vectors and this is a good one.
    Certainly a very large resolution ^__^ .
    Nice work.

WARNING: The thumbnail doesn't do it justice! Download to see the true look of the wallie ^^ .

  3. tecnophreak May 14, 2005

yup, very nice man. lots of inflection here i like the thouights about iit a lot. they go together well. the sky still looks white to me though, XD

  4. chibikko May 14, 2005

it was love at first sight :3 well not with the girl but the whole wallpaper. its flatness is so original and it's the most original vector i've ever seen. though it's meant to be so flat still some shading wouldn't be too wrong. the girl is okay but I mean the wall and the floor. other than that the smoothness is cool as well, it makes the whole wallpaper look very professional. the few birds look great, too. they're giving a nice atmosphere as well as her innocence flowers. wow why is the wallpaper so large? that's impressive ^^ well if i could click twice on 'add to favs' i surely would.

  5. markjo May 14, 2005

Good heavens! I admire the simplicity of the wallpaper's layout and the crispness of colour - very bold and definite choice of colours I haven't seen before. Pretty nice symbological construction behind the choice of the scan as well.
Got a question, anyway - I can understand that the sword is somehow hidden up her sleeve - but what exactly is the flower attached to?

[EDIT]Well, it really seems to be floating in the air... But just after seeing the original art I came to appreciate fully your great job with vectoring the image!

  6. ShiNN May 14, 2005

Quite a nice and original concept, I surely like this wallpaper. I got one complain though: I am not sure if you did that purposely or not, but the outlines of the girl are very spiky and "raw", i mean look at her left hands, shoulders, and other areas, the outlines are almost not curved at all and look very straight and spiky. I don't know if you did that purposely but I don't quite like that result because it contrasts too much with the rest of the composition which is far more accurate, outline-wise. Still a good job though.

  7. drell May 14, 2005

Cool...I have planned to make a wallpaper with that concept art ( well yours is vector, but.. ) ... Well I have exams goming so I'm not a very active waller right now..

    very unique.+Fav

  12. boogybro May 14, 2005

    That is really, really impressive.
You made it look really simple, but it works really well in this vector/wallpaper. :D

  13. jaalin May 15, 2005

this is very good work - however i noticed a few things that are sort of... weird...
first, her pinky on her right hand seems to have been chopped off - based on the position of her other fingers, the pinky should be pointing in about a 7 o'clock position. secondly, the top of the leftmost white flower sort of looks like its being overlapped by the green hill behind it - this is due to the angle of the wall just being about the same as the flower, which creates a strange (undesirable) effect - if you look at it u'll see what i'm talking about. third, i've always thought the most attention-grabbing feature of Kurenai were her fiery red eyes - they are grey in this wallpaper, with her clothes red instead. to color her eyes red would draw more attention to her (and away from the ugly words lol), most specifically to her head and face, which have more detail than any other part of the wallpaper. this sort of attention-diversion is fundamental to this particular wallpaper because of the prevalence of solid color throughout (the ground, walls, hills) in contrast to the detail of the flowers, her clothes, and her hair.
other than the eyes, i think the colors were well chosen, especially the three shades of green for the hills (darkest green for the farthest hill - excellent). it adds another level of depth that the use of perspective on the walls would otherwise not have been able to accomplish.
as for the text - its a good font and has good placement, but i question the choice of color. perhaps a white/red combination to go along with the character? change "lost innocence" to red to emphasize it more, perhaps - after all, that is what the theme of your wallpaper revolves around.

k, i've said enough lol... excellent work! i really appreciate the large size. hope the contest goes well for you.

edit: uhh, this isn't the kurenai from naruto? lol, i guess i take back what i said about the red eyes. but still something to consider eh? :)

Great job on the vectore, but i know you wanted to make the whole wall clean and simple but you could have added more shades on the mountains, deatil vecotors on the structure walls and dirt...but anyway great job as always man..XD

  15. animefreak3 May 15, 2005

I like it, it has a strong reto-anime feel. Almost like Fujiko from Rupin.

  16. calisqo May 15, 2005

    wow ,
    this is unexpected ^_^"
the wall is flat and the use of color is kinda unique.
    It's like expressionism painting < . <
I'm not sure if i got the right term there.
However the color is much funkier.
But i feel that the composition is a bit off, perhaps cos of the excessive ammount of green
adding cloud might compose the wall more.
    Nonetheless unique work ^_^.
    Good luck ^_^

  17. rocknroll-isgo May 16, 2005

Gorgeous, DernierCri. The vector work is clean and smooth and the underlying contexts are well thought out. You caught the scene perfectly. Not to mention, the originality of the wall is refreshing.

  18. Devilet May 16, 2005

It's very simple and sterile indeed ... But the blurriness you added to it I find disrupts the cleaness to it. In the end, the result is pretty good, and colours are rather dull.

  19. StarCentury May 17, 2005

Wow, this looks very interesting and highly original! 0__0;; The whole wallpaper feels like a watercolor painiting and reallie enriches the quality so well! Red Ninja also shows her unique beauty even though she's deadly with her weapon on choice, which I forget! ^_^' Overall, DC you're wowing me all over again and I hope it continues! ;)

  20. Skillzpay May 18, 2005

Wow vector obsessed with this one huh? :p
i like it though, the flatness to this whole thing makes it unique. Like OA mentioned already, some additionaly shading and smaller details could've been beneficial but regardless, this is wicked good.

  21. Holt May 18, 2005

Great vectoring! Very clean and neat. I especially like the building in the background.
    Really well done.

  22. mentis Jun 02, 2005

An excellent vector piece. Reminds me of ukyo-e (sp?) paintings, and I find that the figure looks much better in this setting that she does alone. Well done friend!

  23. yosoyloco Jun 05, 2005

Hey cool, I really like how you got the background working with the character! nice job!

  24. EvilDarkLink Jun 05, 2005

    Jesus, that is beautiful.

This has to one of the best pictures I have ever seen.

    Mad props to you, man.
