It's been couple years since I decided to sit down and work an anime wallpaper. Of course, I've submitted few vector pieces out of boredom/fandom, but what prompted me to work on this piece was annoyance.
Before I had quit walling, this was the last piece I was working on. Vowing that I'd finish it one day, I let it sit around my hard drive day after day, until I realized it had been sitting there for 3 years! Wow! That's a long long time. I wish I could delete it, but what if I decided that I really wanted to work on it somewhere along the future and found it no longer existent? The best solution was to whip out a wallpaper and let the dead die.
While working on this piece, I started getting
pretty nostalgic about it all. It just seems like yesterday when I was sitting
at home after a day of high school to work on a wallpaper and believing that I'd
be doing this forever and ever. Only then did I realize then that many of the
friends I had made in the anime graphics community even before the creation of
minitokyo had slowly, but surely drifted away from the one interest we held in
common. Of course, there are still many older veterans still continuing their
work of excellence, but it is sad to see that the old days have gone away, only
to be replaced by more of talented artists.
I wonder how many people in this community will understand how I feel many years down the road. Perhaps they never will; however, it's still a very interesting thought.
Well, on to the details of the wallpaper. Mainly I drew inspiration from 2
sources:
1. The Last Samurai movie poster for typography
2. Rurouni Kenshin OST cover for leaves effect
3. Episode 31 of Rurouni Kenshin, the scene where Kenshin tells Kaoru
"Goodbye"
So I guess all in all, the premise of this wallpaper is that Kenshin finally returns back to Kaoru, and is no longer a wanderer because he's always had her as a place he belongs.
Big thanks to Tama-Neko's pattern archive, which really helped me give the wallpaper a Japanese feel to certain degree.

anyway, even after 3 years away from walling your skills haven't degraded at all. you still have the same stunning effect in your walls as before.. i think it's just lovely <3

I get emotional when I see other people that use textures in their vectors. I
love the warmth you gave the wallpaper with a faint glow, and the sakura petals
add a sense of depth to it as well.
I have noticed the difference between now and when I first joined Minitokyo a few years ago (was it that long ago? Time flies...). There are people that I talked to here that have disappeared without any real notice, so it's sad to me thinking about it, and the style of wallpapers isn't quite the same as before.
Anyways, I'm glad you finished this wallpaper, it turned out lovely. It certainly merits a favorite.
It's something good to see old wallers like you post their works again. I hope to see the others do the same thing, but yeah, old days have gone away and replaced with new one. It's life.
Clean vector, and the touch of textures gives a nice effect. The pattern looks wonderful with the fading colours. Nice work, especially those petals.
This is just shocking. Yes, there's many talented people who may have replaced those you've seen maybe 3 years ago, but you know old artist do get tired over time and stop working.
You gotta admit this is very wonderful and this wallpaper must tell a story sicne it took 3 years I tihnk you said to kind of do this. O.O"
The background is so simple, but the designs are wonderful. The sakura petals are just so simple yet they give such a nice effect not putting so much details that could ruin these couples. The vector was wodnerfully done for Kaoru and Kenshin too, I mean I really love the flow of the outlines and the textures + patterns you choose.
This is defiantely worth full viewing and I would've add this to **excellent** higlight if only you'd join

The good old days. It's so good to see that you decided to finish this wallpaper. I remember you talking about this awhile back..or so I think you did @_@. Jeeze, considering how long it's been, it's like you haven't lost your touch at all. I'm sure everyone at some point will understand how you feel, sammo. It's been rather painful to watch so many great artists leave MT, but it's also been a pleasure seeing so many talented new one appear. A very solid wallpaper that proves no matter how long of a break someone takes, their talent stays with them =P. Very nicely done and it looks absolutely gorgeous. Great work, sammo. Prehaps we can see more wallpapers from you in the future? =O

Wow, it's been a while since the last time I saw something like this. The good old school. I love the simplicity of this, the colors give the wall a very nostalgic feeling. I love so much the text, it's just amazing ^^

I havn't touched anime in close to 7 months. But just for the sake of old times this is going to throne on my desktop for a while.
Sometimes I open my photoshop folders and miss the long hours of work on wallpapers and the funny times on IRC, but then most of the time I don't think about it
Talk about old school, I sure do miss those days. I'm just blown away by the use of patterns, colors, text, everything, it's just an amazing wall. You should really start walling again, people love your skills and I do too :3
I never expected to see another wall from you honestly, thought you were practically done with this place.
But it is nice to see you came back again to your old roots to do something nostalgic.
I still wall even now, but I find it a big struggle with all the new talent, and being out of practice when things got busy didn't help either.

So nostalgic. There are a lot of things in life like that, which we grow out of and move beyond... But the memories of how much we enjoyed them come with us. Great, now I feel old.
